Based on the true story of Belle da Costa Greene, a woman who defied all odds to carve out a destiny of her own choosing, this is a richly imagined novel bursting with atmosphere, lush period detail, and many unforgettable characters. New York in the 1900s. A young girl fascinated by rare books defies all odds and becomes the director of one of the country's most prestigious private libraries. It belongs to the magnate J. P. Morgan, darling of the international aristocracy and one of the city's richest men. Flamboyant, brilliant, beautiful, Belle is among New York society's most sought after intellectuals. She also hides a secret. Although she looks white, she is African American, the daughter of a famous black activist who sees her desire to hide her origins as the consummate betrayal. Torn between history's ineluctable imperatives and the freedom to belong to the society of her choosing, Belle's drama, which plays out in a violently racist America, is one that resonates forcefully, and illuminatingly even today. The fruit of years of research and interviews, Alexandra Lapierre's magnificent novel recounts the struggles, victories, and heartbreaks of a woman who is free, astonishingly determined, daring, and fully, exuberantly alive.

Eye opening in so many ways! 😲 I have mixed feelings about Bella and some of her decisions. Ultimately, they cost her dearly and the question is whether it was worth it.

The weird thing is no mention is made of whether & what Belle liked to read recreationally! It appears her real passion was collecting & organizing & preserving treasures.

My only quibble with the book is it‘s a bit long in the detail at times. #Europacollective

Tamra I can tell Belle is going to be a burr under my saddle for a while as I digest & wrestle with her. It‘s been a good historical point of discussion with my daughter. Will be adding the Morgan library to my wish list. I was a bit surprised at the admission price, given the mission of the library. It would be cost prohibitive to many. (edited) 6d
Tamra I want to know what JP Morgan would have done or how he would have felt had he found out her secret. He was so attached to her. His son though? The way he was described it‘s hard to believe he wouldn‘t have sacked her. 6d
Ruthiella I have known librarians who don‘t care about the book content-it‘s the catalog organization they care about. 6d

Tamra @Ruthiella why do I think that is odd??? 6d
Ruthiella @Tamra Because we LOVE books! 😂 6d
Tamra @Ruthiella 😂😂 Good answer! 6d
LeahBergen I became fascinated by her after visiting the Morgan! 6d
Tamra @LeahBergen that must have been fun! She‘s a complicated person. 6d
jlhammar You finished! It‘s a long one. Good so far though. I‘m starting my holiday break soon so hope to finish yet this week. 5d

Learn something new every day they say! Well, I‘ve been informed by my teens we celebrate what is commonly referred to as a “tacky Christmas.” 🤣

Definitely NOT in keeping with Morgan & Greene standards. Our decorations aren‘t matchy or themed. Wait, I guess the theme IS tacky.

Again the 💵 is simply astounding in this book. One shipment of collectibles alone was worth over $1B (BILLION). It was scheduled to come over on the Titanic. 😳

tpixie Love your Christmas 🎄 look!! I was so worried about that shipment!!!! I can‘t believe the price!! 1w
Tamra @tpixie I know! I haven‘t read why Belle changed the shipment date - do you remember coming across it? 1w
kspenmoll I so want to read this book-maybe next year! 1w

merelybookish I just have always assumed Christmas decorations*are* tacky and that's kinda the point. It's all just a matter of scale. 1w
LeahBergen I love my tacky Christmas 😆 1w
willaful @LeahBergen I know some people find colored lights tacky and you will take my colored lights out of my cold dead hands! 1w
LeahBergen @willaful Exactly! 😆 1w
CarolynM Tacky Christmas all the way💖 1w
tpixie @Tamra no! I can‘t remember! How frustrating. If you find out, let me know. I feel like there was some conflict, or it wasn‘t addressed again until after the fact. I can‘t remember though…. Now I need to find the physical book to comb through it! (edited) 7d
Tamra @tpixie thank you! I didn‘t recall if it was spelled out in the book. 7d

Belle Greene was a remarkable woman!!! The Morgan Library owes its ‘ life‘ to her!
I cant imagine what it would be like to carry the secret of passing.
This was another great read for #EuropaCollective.

I decided to see how much she inherited:
She I nherited $50,000 in 1913 from JP Morgan
Today‘s equivalent would be $1.6 million

She also inherited $50,000 in 1943 from his son
Which the equivalent today is $900,000

Tamra I‘m about 2/3 in and the 💵 is jaw dropping. 2w
tpixie @Tamra 💰 yes!! Your post about the price equivalent of the art made me think of looking into her inheritance equivalent! 💰 2w
jlhammar Wow! I‘m only about 70 pages in, but enjoying it so far. 1w

jlhammar Oh, and you read The Personal Librarian before? I‘m curious if you preferred one over the other. 1w
tpixie @jlhammar they both are very good. This book is a more thorough history, and although it‘s a novel, I believe it reads a little bit more like a non-fiction book. The personal librarian did not go quite as deep, but did have interesting historical information and read more like a novel. 1w
tpixie @jlhammar I am glad I read both… 1w

Belle is about to offer 125k for Lord Amherst‘s Caxton collection of Didlington Hall. That‘s a cool $50M in today‘s dollars. That isn‘t even her total book buying budget! 😳 Can you imagine?

I did a small dive into Didlington Hall, Caxton Collection, & the Amherst swindle. #Europacollective

Absolutely fascinating. Didn‘t know anything about the MC- it‘s a novel about her life. What a tapestry of life she had- have no idea how she had the confidence to pull it all off, but she was brilliant.
Big exhibition about her next year in the Morgan Library, now just to get to NY.

This is a fascinating story of the life of Belle Greene - a spirited and determined young woman who rose to become the highest paid woman in 1920s America, as the librarian of the JP Morgan library. With a fierce passion for books and manuscripts she built the library collection and laid the foundation for public access. Inspiring enough - and then you remember she did this whilst holding a secret that could ruin her.

Mitch Great story - I wish I‘d of read it before our epic trip to the library in 2019. It reads love narrative non fiction - deeply researched and faithful to source material whilst also being a page turner. 2y
