The Ways We Hide: A Novel | Kristina Mcmorris
19 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
From the New York Timesbestselling author of Sold On A Monday--over a million copies sold!--comes a sweeping World War II tale of an illusionist whose recruitment by British intelligence sets her on a perilous, heartrending path. As a little girl raised amid the hardships of Michigan's Copper Country, Fenna Vos learned to focus on her own survival. That ability sustains her even now as the Second World War rages in faraway countries. Though she performs onstage as the assistant to an unruly escape artist, behind the curtain she's the mastermind of their act. Ultimately, controlling her surroundings and eluding traps of every kind helps her keep a lingering trauma at bay. Yet for all her planning, Fenna doesn't foresee being called upon by British military intelligence. Tasked with designing escape aids to thwart the Germans, MI9 seeks those with specialized skills for a war nearing its breaking point. Fenna reluctantly joins the unconventional team as an inventor. But when a test of her loyalty draws her deep into the fray, she discovers no mission is more treacherous than escaping one's past. Inspired by stunning true accounts, The Ways We Hideis a gripping story of love and loss, the wars we fight--on the battlefields and within ourselves--and the courage found in unexpected places.

It is obvious that a lot of research went into this story. I loved the way the author tied various events together to create this book, I learned so much while reading it! I think my favorite sections were the ones that involved magic. It was so neat to learn that magicians likely played a part in saving lives during WW2.
I look forward to meeting the author, Kristina McMorris, during our book club video call on 6/29/23!

Read for a library book discussion I‘m attending with my mom. We finished it on audio on our road trip. Maybe I‘m burnt out on WWII books for now. This felt like many others with its own little twist. It could have ended about 15 chapters sooner than it did.

I loved this twist on a WWII historical fiction. It was the right amount of background to get us to the present, but I did think the end dragged on a little too long. When my cousin told me to read this book about a magician helping with the war efforts overseas, I assumed our protagonist was male. It was such a delight to have a female and I‘m ashamed of my assumption!

Fantastic! The book is described as a cross between James Bond & Kate Quinn, and I‘d say they got that right. Fenna Vos is an illusionist who gets invited to work with the MI9 in London to help the allies. There is so much more to it than that though: Houdini, childhood loss & trauma, monopoly, family lost and found, I could go on and on.

James Bond is not the only one that has Q to help him!
This is an incredible story of a female illusionist during WW2 who helped with escape & evade technology. The spy gadgets that were used & how they are hidden were ingenious!

Haven't done much reading the last couple of weeks but got a book haul today from our local bookstore. Picked up a book for myself and three for the little guy. He is starting to get into longer stories so we are going to give these a try at bedtime reading.

A fascinating story starring Fenna Voss, daughter of a Dutch immigrant, who after becoming fascinated with Houdini goes on to aid the British Government with making hidden devices capable of eluding enemy forces during WW11. Fenna is a fictional construction, but there are a lot of true elements in this story, and I didn‘t really know about this program, so there is a lot to learn. Along the way there is also some romance and suspense.

Saw Kristina McMorris at my local indie last night. She‘s on tour with the tagged book. She has a phenomenal slideshow presentation to illustrate her book talk! Learned so much and could have listened to her for hours. Don‘t miss seeing her on tour! You will be fascinated by her research and knowledge. She is traveling the country right now, go see her, and buy this book! Please visit https://abookandadog.com where I share my experience.

Lazy Sunday mornings, I LOVE ‘EM! Ran all my errands yesterday because they were forecasting rain all day on Sunday. I got up this morning, made my coffee and am not leaving this spot … until the dryer buzzer goes off 😂 #LaundryNeverRests I hope you all have a lovely, restful and restorative Sunday ☺️

Once again an author has managed to tell a riveting and entertaining story set around WWII that reveals details of things that even after all the previous novels I have read, are new to me. This one features a magician and the workings of MI9 (yes I typed that correctly). I loved the characters, the story and the education, that sent me googling to learn more. This one almost rose to the level of “The Nightingale“ for me. 4.75/5 stars.

Those readers who enjoy historical fiction and want to learn something new will definitely enjoy this book that I think could have been a bit shorter.

Her author notes give wonderful facts you won‘t want to miss reading.

Check out the turned down corner for a clue of what‘s inside. 4/5

Thanks to the folks at 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗲 who sent me a copy of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲. I'm savoring it this Labor Day weekend to be ready to discuss it with my fellow members next week. ⁣
