Hell and Back
Hell and Back: A Longmire Mystery | Craig Johnson
9 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
A new novel in the beloved New York Times bestselling Longmire series. What if you woke up lying in the middle of the street in the infamous town of Fort Pratt, Montana, where thirty young Native boys perished in a tragic 1896 boarding-school fire? What if every person you encountered in that endless night was dead? What if you were covered in blood and missing a bullet from the gun holstered on your hip? What if there was something out there in the yellowed skies, along with the deceased and the smell of ash and dust, something the Northern Cheyenne refer to as the veohts-hem?se, the Wandering Without, the Taker of Souls? What if the only way you know who you are is because your name is printed in the leather sweatband of your cowboy hat, and what if it says your name is Walt Longmire . . . but you dont remember him? In Hell and Back, the eighteenth installment of the Longmire series, author Craig Johnson takes the beloved sheriff to the very limits of his sanity to do battle with the most dangerous adversary hes ever faced: himself.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sometimes a book in a series works well as a standalone. This is not one of those.

So, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning (Cold Dish) and then work your way up to this newest installment in the Longmire series. Craig Johnson is a stone-cold genius of a storyteller and I, once again, come to the end of one of his books feeling like I just took an unforgettable ride with some of my favorite people. Five big ol‘ stars, yep!

I may not be a Longmire fan, but my mom sure is! She‘s reading the new release and finding the dreamy/trippy parts of it weird and not in keeping with the series. She wants to know if anyone here has read it and has an opinion??

KathyWheeler I haven‘t read this one, but the Longmire books I‘ve read have all had a little touch of Native American mysticism in them. Is this more than that usual touch? 1y
Megabooks @KathyWheeler yes, she says it‘s very twilight zone. Apparently it‘s been unclear for half the book whether Walt is awake or not, and that‘s driving her bananas. Like a kind of is he being held against his will and drugged and the book is a fever dream? She doesn‘t like that trope. Not a spoiler because it‘s a guess. 🤔 1y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks interesting. I love the usual mysticism, but this might drive me nuts. 1y
BookNotes @Megabooks It is a way different feel than the other books-way more mysticism/supernatural elements. I felt off-balance throughout a lot of it and I think that‘s intentional. The main character, Walt Longmire, is off balance throughout the book as well. I loved the book, but give me magical realism/supernatural elements any day. 😍 I‘m weird like that. 😂 1y
Megabooks @CherylRussell thanks for weighing in! My mom is not a fan of MR, but I am. I‘m sorry she didn‘t enjoy this one because it‘s generally one of her favorite series. She‘s 78 so kind of set in her ways! 😂😂 Glad you enjoyed this! 1y

In the beginning, I thought this was a bit too trippy but as I got into the book I realized what was going on and was hooked!

If you've never read Craig Johnson, this is not the place to start. You need an understanding of the people and history to really get this one.

However, if you love mystery and haven't tried Longmire, what are you waiting for?

It's been a busy vacay week. I did take some time at Chili's to enjoy these Mighty Bites with ranch, fries, and a side of Longmire. Hoping to get some quality reading done tomorrow before heading back to work on Monday.

Just another reason to love September — it means a new Longmire book!!! 😍 (So glad to be done with “The Memory Police,” which went totally off the rails in the last thirty or so pages and ruined the book, tbqh.) But I know hanging out with Walt, Vic, and Henry is the perfect antidote! 😍 #hellandback #craigjohnson #waltlongmire #victoriamoretti #henrystandingbear
