Four generations of women experience love, loss, war, and hope from the rise of Nazism to the Cuban Revolution and finally, the fall of the Berlin Wall in this sweeping novel from the bestselling author of the timely must-read (People) The German Girl. Berlin, 1931: Ally Keller, a talented young poet, is alone and scared when she gives birth to a mixed-race daughter she names Lilith. As the Nazis rise to power, Ally knows she must keep her baby in the shadows to protect her against Hitlers deadly ideology of Aryan purity. But as she grows, it becomes more and more difficult to keep Lilith hidden so Ally sets in motion a dangerous and desperate plan to send her daughter across the ocean to safety. Havana, 1958: Now an adult, Lilith has few memories of her mother or her childhood in Germany. Besides, shes too excited for her future with her beloved Martin, a Cuban pilot with strong ties to the Batista government. But as the flames of revolution ignite, Lilith and her newborn daughter, Nadine, find themselves at a terrifying crossroads. Berlin, 1988: As a scientist in Berlin, Nadine is dedicated to ensuring the dignity of the remains of all those who were murdered by the Nazis. Yet she has spent her entire lifetime avoiding the truth about her own familys history. It takes her daughter, Luna, to encourage Nadine to uncover the truth about the choices her mother and grandmother made to ensure the survival of their children. And it will fall to Luna to come to terms with a shocking betrayal that changes everything she thought she knew about her familys past. Separated by time but united by sacrifice, four women embark on journeys of self-discovery and find themselves to be living testaments to the power of motherly love.

I appreciated the idea of what the author was trying to do, but the story lagged in some parts, and I just wanted to get to the points sooner!

Quirkybookworm I enjoyed it. It was very different than most WWII novels. Haunting though. 10mo

This one just didn't have enough of a hook to make me want to slog through the slow build. The premise of the story is great. Execution, not so much. Also some eye roll on details in the beginning stemming from a man's perspective of pregnancy and birth. I tried to push on because of the positive reviews (made it 28%), but it's just not worth it to me.

A mother wants her child always to have a good life, This book tells the story of not only one character but the lives of the main character's daughter, then which turns into the main character and then continues the pattern down. So far we have been following the character Ally Keller in Berlin in 1931, she has been facing lots of repercussions due to the fact she fell in love with a black musician and at that time it caused lots of-

rosa.kim controversy because there was lots of racism back then. We also see how hard it was on Ally's daughter Lilith being a mixed baby. If you like books that show the more human side of wars (as this book is placed back when there were many wars) I would recommend this book, mainly because you get to see so many different characters' points of view throughout the book. the point of view of this story is in the third person, for each character. i think- 13mo
rosa.kim it was a good point of view to use in this story because we switch characters too often to have it be in any other point of view. The author uses the characters' names to make it clear that we aren't characters but just a reader that can cross into their world. 13mo
MissYaremcio Oh this looks awesome! Thanks Rosa! 6/6 12mo

This is a fascinating historical fiction novel about 4 generations of woman. It was well researched and I learned so much more about such things as the Nazis eugenics program and Operation Peter Pan out of Cuba. The sheer number of characters and the long time span did mean I didn't get quite as attached to the characters as I would have liked, but I still enjoyed the story and being educated while being entertained is a plus every time. 3.75/5

FULL REVIEW 1/11

Four women, four stories, four different time periods.

Three of them - Ally, Lilith, Nadine - mothers who find themselves in similar situations - they had to send their daughters away to protect them because of war and prejudice. The fourth is Luna who never married.

The alluring, gorgeous cover adds to the captivating storyline. 4/5

This is really good. It's about a mixed race girl and her mom in 1940s Berlin. And how to make sure the daughter survives being labeled a mischling. But that's the beginning. It's multigenerational and it sort of loops back on itself. Looking at who the monsters are actually and under what circumstances.
