Gilded Mountain
Gilded Mountain: A Novel | Kate Manning
11 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
Sylvie Pelletier is the irrepressible young heroine of this sweeping historical novel, set in Moonstone, Colorado, 1907. Hers is the tale of a hardscrabble education, about right and wrong, and the consequences of speaking out against injustice. In a voice full of questions and sly humor, Sylvie recounts the story of leaving her familys snowbound mountain cabin to work in the local manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her, fascinated by her employer, the charming Countess Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. When she learns that a European King will soon arrive for a hunting party, her fairy-tale ideas of glamour and romance take a dark turn, as she realizes the Padgetts lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them. Their servants, the Gradys, descendants of formerly enslaved people have long known this to be trueand are making plans to form a utopian community on the Colorado prairie. Outside the manor walls, Moonstone is roiling with discontent. A handsome union organizer, along with labor leader Mary Harris Mother Jones, is stirring up the quarry workers. The editor of the local newspapera bold woman who takes Sylvie on as apprenticeis publishing unflattering accounts of the Padgett Company. Threats of violence permeate the air. Sylvie navigates between vastly different worlds, and struggles to find her own voice amidst conflicting loves and loyalties. When the harsh and dangerous winter brings tragedy, Sylvie must choose between silence and revenge. Drawn from true stories of Colorado history, Gilded Mountain is an unforgettable saga of a bygone American West seized by robber barons and settled by immigrants; a novel about resilience in the midst of hardship, and a story infused with longingfor family and equality, beauty and joy.

I thought this was really very good. It's historical fiction set in Colorado around the Great Depression, focusing on miners and labor conditions. My aunt already took it away and started reading it herself.

When your bookmark matches your book 😍😍😍
(I love saving the labels from wine I‘ve tried, they‘re like mini pieces of art! And bookmark size too!)

peanutnine Love that idea for a bookmark! How do you get the labels off the bottles without ripping? 1y
Aims42 @peanutnine I found these at a winery a few years ago and LOVE using them! They‘re pretty easy to use: https://a.co/dXTJde8 (link goes to Amazon). Then I tape a blank notecard on the back to make it sturdy (edited) 1y

I feel only lukewarm about this book. I hope it picks up, but I‘m almost 200 pages in so I‘ll probably finish it today. This cookie is so delicious especially warmed! A gift from our Thanksgiving guests from my favorite out state bakery….Jolie Ollie‘s. Such a treat! I even lit the table candles again! Hope all had a wonderful holiday!

This satisfying, well written historical novel is set in a marble mining town in Colorado in the early 20th century. Young Sylvia Pelletier comes of age in the town of Moonstone as her beloved father‘s work to bring a union to the exploited mine workers is raising tensions. A romance with the labor sympathizing mine owners‘ son, and a mentor in the hard drinking news woman KT Redman makes Sylvia‘s story into a genuinely page turning adventure!

Finally one of the November #Aardvark hints seems to solidly line up with one of our earlier confirmed spoilers

? = The plot involves the "editor of a local newspaper"
? = The mc gets a job workimg for an extremely wealthy family in the mining business
⛰ = Set in the Colorado mountains
? = Not sure exactly, but there's a snowy setting so this doesn't exactly stand out ?

EvieBee I just wanted to tell you that your WLS post awhile ago really motivated me to do something about my health. I had qualified 6 months before the pandemic and did all the work but chickened out. Three years later, finally doing it! November 28 is the day! Thank again for sharing your story. You don‘t know how much it meant to me. 1y
swishandflick @EvieBee Oh wow, congratulations!! I'm touched that my story helped in some small way. It's not always easy (don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise!) but it's so worth it. I'm sending all the good vibes to you and happy to answer questions if you ever want to reach out. Post-op for me (once I was able to tolerate food again) included a lot of seafood, haha. Also the company 1st Phorm has the yummiest protein powder I've ever tried! 1y
