When concert pianist Vivienne Mourdant's father dies, he leaves to her the care of an adult ward she knew nothing about. The woman is supposedly a patient at Hurstwell Asylum. The woman's portrait is shockingly familiar to Vivienne, so when the asylum claims she was never a patient there, Vivienne is compelled to discover what happened to the figure she remembers from childhood dreams. The longer she lingers in the deep shadows and forgotten towers at Hurstwell, the fuzzier the line between sanity and madness becomes. She hears music no one else does, receives strange missives with rose petals between the pages, and untangles far more than is safe for her to know. But can she uncover the truth about the mysterious woman she seeks? And is there anyone at Hurstwell she can trust with her suspicions? Fan-favorite Joanna Davidson Politano casts a delightful spell with this lyrical look into the nature of women's independence and artistic expression during the Victorian era--and now.

Mixed feelings with this one. It is not a great mystery story and it has some religious content which is not my thing. However, I liked the gothic atmosphere how it was described. There were something in the story tone that I liked. Those music scenes were delighted you, could felt that love for the music. But the mystery was in some aspects absurd. Vivienne voluntarily enter into an asylum to know more about ...(cont) ⬇️ 2.5/3⭐️

Gissy (Cont.) ...an unknown woman her father left under her care after he died. Who is this woman and what is the relationship with her? She could the solicitor but no, she just took another identity to enter into the asylum🙄

The book is a beautiful edition with sprayed/designed pages and pretty end pages. The gifs inside the subscription box were practical: two mugs, a blanket and candles.

3✨ #OUABC This one started out great. I like the idea of incorporating music into a mental institution to help the residents. I also love a good mystery as our main character hides her identity, because she is famous, to locate a person her father had been harboring there. The read was pretty good, but because of the POVs it was hard knowing who was speaking or if it was one person narrating since both play piano. ⬇️ #DoubleBookSpin May

Roary47 plus the person keeping our famous pianist was drugging and confusing her to think she was crazy. 1y

It was the gifts from this #ouabc selection that kept me reading, as I would have given up around page 150; I‘m glad I stuck with it! This book had an unreliable narrator that had me questioning EVERYTHING. Maybe this was to help me identify with the MC who is trapped in the insane asylum? The musical references and the faith of the MC was really what helped ground things for me. I also had to show how beautiful this book is without the jacket!

This was a slow healing type book. Wasn‘t bad, just didn‘t click with me. Vivienne is a renowned pianist who finds herself in charge of an asylum inmate. Which she becomes a forced inmate herself. Which is what hit me hard, as most women here are not insane. With one in there because she lost her baby. I liked the soft theme of finding the light in the darkest of times. The times you‘re broken down the most so you can be rebuilt. #ouabc

An incredibly gripping symphony of music and faith, The Lost Melody held me in thrall from its darkly dramatic beginning to its gentle, hopeful finish.
