Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me | Ralph Macchio
13 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Since The Karate Kid first crane-kicked its way into the pop culture stratosphere in June 1984, there hasnt been a week Ralph Macchio hasnt heard friendly shouts of Wax on, wax off or Sweep the leg! Now, with Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in the #1 ranked Netflix show Cobra Kai, he is finally ready to look back at this classic movie and give the fans something theyve long craved. The book will be Ralph Macchios celebratory reflection on the legacy of The Karate Kid in film, pop culture, and his own life. It will be a comprehensive look at a film that shaped him as much as it influenced the world. Macchio will share an insider's perspective of the untold story behind his starring rolethe innocence of the early days, the audition process, and the filmmaking experience--as well as take readers through the birth of some of the films most iconic moments. Ultimately, the book centers on the film itself, focusing on the reason that the characters and themes have endured in such a powerful way and how these personal experiences have impacted Macchio's life. It will bring readers back to the day they met Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi for the first time, but will also provide a fascinating lens into how our pasts shape all of us and how the past can come back to enrich one's life in surprising and wonderful ways.

Definitely taking advantage of the resurgence of the popularity of the character due to the “Cobra Kai” franchise. A lot of heart felt nostalgia and behind the scenes stories primarily of the original films. It‘s entertaining. There are times when the author kind of blows the characters role as a cultural icon out of proportion a little. But the role was the pinnacle of his career, so I can‘t fault him for that. Signed copy.

Enjoying this book but I‘m distracted by this toy sitting atop the emergency lights. What‘s the story here? 🤔

Aims42 😂😂😂 Too funny! Yeah, what‘s the backstory on how/why it got up there? 13mo

This memoir struck the perfect note while taking a walk down memory lane.

I absolutely loved The Karate Kid as a teenager and saw it multiple times in the theater.

Macchio recognizes how lucky he is to be part of the Karate Kid franchise and to still be making fans with the success of Cobra Kai.

He truly seems to be a nice guy.

I still kind of have a crush on Johnny Lawrence, though 😄

I loved The Karate Kid as a kid (still do) and I‘m pretty obsessed with the Cobra Kai series on Netflix, so I loved every second of this memoir. Macchio‘s love for his Daniel LaRusso character shines through, as does his appreciation for the fans, and for the opportunity to expand The Karate Kid story to the next generation. I listened to the audio version, but I‘m glad I also bought the print copy because it‘s a keeper!

MallenNC This one is definitely on my TBR! 1y

So, um, I may have a teeny memoir problem 😬

I‘m enjoying listening to Ralph Macchio talk about The Karate Kid and just started Matthew Perry‘s new book today. Looking forward to the other 3 as they come in… hopefully not all at once!

MommyOfTwo Ooo those top two both sound good. Put audio on hold, they are both several months out lol 1y
Deblovestoread I started the Perry today and have Rickman‘s waiting. My daughter bought Tom‘s so I have that to look forward to as well. Great for #NonFictionNovember 😊 1y

I included some NF picks in my #bookspinbingo list, in an effort to read more of the genre for #nonfictionnovember. The tagged book (which I may just listen to on audio so I can hear Ralph‘s voice 😂) is my #bookspin and The Nineties (go Gen X!) is my #doublespin. So excited that both picks are NF!

EclecticBookLover I loved The Nineties! I listed to it and thought it was fantastic. 1y

What I love about this memoir is how Ralph weaves his own life with his onscreen persona Daniel Larusso. I also liked how he feels himself to be a keeper of this story because of how much it means to so many fans. That integrity comes through in spades and helped capture the dedication he feels to the characters and its overarching message. With such a iconic role to live up to, Macchio really does handle it with grace, reverence and gratitude.
