Far From the Tree | Solomon, Andrew
post image

I. Did. It. #finishwhatyoustarted #nonfictionnovember #allergictochunksters 11 years ago my brother in law gifted this to me, it was an absolute favourite of his and it makes sense to me how it resonated with him. As a woman, I feel the lack of female representation in this gigantic tome of a book appalling. It starts with son and ends with father which is a beautiful full circle for him as a gay man but leaves out 50% of the population

Karisa 🏆 The older I get, the harder it is for me to read books without realistically written women. Honestly, 90%+ of what I read is written by women these days. I‘m reading Stoner right now. I know it‘s a good book, but without a relatable adult woman character in sight so far 🤷🏻‍♀️ feels hollow 10h
mcctrish @Karisa Andrew did women and girls a disservice not including at least one chapter detailing all the slings and arrows a patriarchal society/world throws at us and more importantly how pervasive they are that it‘s the norm 10h
Suet624 It‘s like watching old movies and being shocked by what we accepted in the past. 9h

ChaoticMissAdventures I fully agree. I went back and forth between pick (for all of his research, and honestly my relief that the Trans chapter was not phobic) and so-so. As the “birthing“ sex I found his lack of discussion around pregnancy and birth - centering actual women not just the mistakes or the results really unsettling. I also was really frustrated at his lack of discussion around race. Especially in the crime chapter. 9h
mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures yes! Also poverty in relation to race and women and how that affects everything 🤯 9h

Mehso-so

A detailed —or rather, overly detailed — memoir. (Ex. 100 pages in, Cher is still only 15 years old.) Some interesting tidbits here and there, but way too much about her clothes. I feel like I learned about every dress, pair of shoes, crop top and bell-bottomed jeans she ever wore. Probably won‘t read part 2. (Or 3? How many of these are on tap?)

TheBookHippie I have not picked this up at the library several times 😵‍💫🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 15h
Amiable @TheBookHippie Thank heavens for the library, is all I can say about some books. 😀 12h
TheBookHippie @Amiable anytime I‘m on the fence or don‘t want to purchase I use the library. 🙃 and yes… whew. 9h

Pickpick

This is a light pick for me. I enjoyed it but didn‘t love it. I appreciated the early history of how bookstores developed in the U.S. and found the stories of well-known independent bookstores interesting. However, this is an incredibly broad topic, and hearing about a few specific bookstores I know or have visited just made me want to learn of more variety for my list.

TimEW I enjoyed this book, most likely because I really love history. If you you would like to read more personal perspectives from booksellers and librarians, check out James Patterson‘s “The Secret Lives of Booksellers and Librarians”. This is a collection of true stories from people whose careers are centered around their love of books. I highly recommend it. 17h
Daisey @TimEW I did enjoy this one but not as much as I expected. Your recommendation does sound interesting; I‘ll add it to the never ending list! 14h

Memorial Days: A Memoir | Geraldine Brooks

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a Litsy find I picked up after seeing @TEArificbooks post about it. Lovely memoir weaving together the pieces together timeline of the unexpected death of the author‘s husband while they were apart, and her sojourn to Flinders Island three years later when she finally stopped to grieve and heal. #nfn #nonfictionnovember

Say Everything | Ione Skye

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you‘d asked me who Ione Skye was a couple of weeks ago I would have come up empty, but she was part of just about every Gen X coming of age touchpoint… In Say Anything, dated Anthony Kiedis (as a teenager 😬), married Ad Rock, dated Madonna‘s ex-girlfriends, and somehow wrote a very dishy memoir that was mature and insightful and not tawdry. Really enjoyed it! #nfn #nonfictionnovember

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I‘m in Michigan but this wasn‘t on my radar until I happened to hear about an event with the author. The talk and book were both really interesting, weaving in context about Great Lakes shipping, the commerce and industry that drove it, the Edmund Fitzgerald itself and several members of the crew and their families, and even the making to the Gordon Lightfoot song. I learned a lot! #nfn #nonfictionnovember

I‘ve read a few books about Tolkien, Lewis, and the Inklings, and I still thoroughly enjoyed the style and perspective of this book. It‘s not strictly a graphic novel biography as it alternates full pages of text with panels and also includes a few narrative fantasy elements, but it is full of factual information about both writers and their friendship. The art was also great.

Please note: Virginia Robert Guiffre's book“Nobody's Girl“ does not exonerate any of Epstein's associates, including a certain president (who she first met while working at Mar-a-Lago where she also met Ghislaine Maxwell). #SheSaid #NonfictionNovember

In Chapter 38, she actually wrote: “There are other men whom I was trafficked to who have threatened me in another way: by asserting that they will use litigation to bankrupt me. . .

Karisa “One of those men‘s names has come up repeatedly in various court filings, and in response, he has told my lawyers that if I talk about him publicly, he will employ his vast resources to keep me in court for the rest of my life. While I have named him in sworn depositions and identified him to the FBI, I fear that if I do so again here, my family will bear the emotional and financial brunt of that decision. 4d
Karisa “I have the same fears about another man whom I was forced to have sex with many times—a man whom I also saw having sexual contact with Epstein himself. I would love to identify him here. But this man is very wealthy and very powerful. . .“ #epsteinfiles #virginiarobertsgiuffre 4d

AmyG Seems alot is happening quickly. Hoping for justice for all the women as a result of the email dump. 🤞🏻 4d
Karisa @AmyG It‘s so frustrating because watching NBC news and they just said that her book only said good things about Trump. I was like, wait, what? That‘s not exactly right. We don‘t know because she doesn‘t name all the men out of fear, and she‘s only one of many victims. . . 4d
AmyG Fear, exactly. Even Epstein says Trump is as evil as it gets. May he get EVERYTHING he deserves. 4d
Karisa @AmyG 💯% He‘s such a 🤬. It feels like a mockery of our presidency sometimes 4d
Jas16 I was having a hard time reading the way the media was painting was said/ not said about Trump as well. 4d
Karisa @Jas16 They clearly haven‘t read the source they are citing. She‘s not here to rebut it. I‘m hoping the full files including testimony/depositions are are released soon and untampered with so that more of these perpetrators are brought to justice 4d
SamAnne Just started this book last night. Have been out of cell range the last couple days and am out of loop on all that has transpired! Will catch up today. Difficult read. 4d

#TodayILearned about the enormous progress made in antitrust regulation by the Biden administration, primarily because people were fighting hard for it. Going to try to hold onto that optimistic thought because I am, frankly, depressed AF by the actions of the Democrats.

Very readable and interesting book, though I'm not sure that helpful for the average non-techy person.
