A frothy and wise Bridgerton-esque YA romance with an all-Black main castthe first book in a debut duology, set in turn-of-the-last-century Chicago. The year is 1910. The Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in the United States, their fortune made through the hard work and entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now, the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties. This is the story of the Davenport daughters, their maid, and their best friendOlivia, Helen, Amy-Rose, and Rubyas the four find their way, and unexpectedly find love, in a rapidly changing country. Inspired by the real-life story of the C.R. Patterson dynasty, The Davenports offers a glimpse into a period of African-American history often overlooked, while delivering a totally escapist, swoon-worthy read.

I was drawn to this book by the gorgeous cover. The beginning lived up to that promise but I soon found it tedious. All 4 of these young women strain against society's expectations; they want out of the boxes their class, their skin color, & their gender put them in. Sounds good! But their stories hit all the same notes at the same times & I got bored. I skimmed the last 3rd. I am a lot older than the target audience so it may be me. A soft pick.

YA rom following the Davenport girls, 1 of the few wealthy black families, & their friends‘ love stories in 1910 USA. They will fall in love w/ the men they aren‘t supposed to. How will they tell their parents?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had high hopes 4 this book. It ended up being mostly boring. I didn‘t like most of the characters for most of the book. The girls‘ character arcs tho are great examples for how arcs should be in books. I also liked the diversity.

bookandbedandtea I'm 1/3 into this and I'm bored. Haven't decided if I'm going to push through. I had high hopes for this! 7mo

Excellent plot developments and character motivations, but a couple of the romantic developments felt more sketched out than earned. There will be plenty of time for that to change as this series progresses, though, and I love the focus on Black high society! #yalit #yahistoricalfiction

This is a historical YA romance set after Reconstruction and it features wealthy Black American families. The main characters are two sisters, their friend, and their ladies maid, all of whom are trying to find their way. It seems to be the first in a series because the ending is unresolved. I still enjoyed it, and recommend it to people who like The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey. The audiobook narrator had a very pleasant style.

Beautiful story about 5 young adults growing up in a divided country where commitments to family often conflict with the commitments to themselves. Engaging and beautiful but left no conclusions, you don‘t know what these characters ultimately choose for themselves and that‘s devastating because by the end of this book you care. You are invested. Hope to see a sequel.

Fans of Bridgerton would ♥️ this! Follow 4 ladies as they approach their dating season in 1910 Chicago. I loved getting 4 POVs from Black women &felt transported to another time.Expect scandal, romantic scenes, &lots of rebellion from the youngsters-falling for those their parents wish they wouldn‘t🤭I didn‘t realize this was a series however, &would rec waiting until more release bc the ending does come abruptly w/o closing up a single romance😑

TheBookHippie I usually wait for all the series to be out 🤣🖤 2y
TheBookKeepers So smart! I can‘t believe I missed the detail about this being a series 😂 I honestly thought it was a stand-alone until I got to the end and was like. Whhaaaat? @TheBookHippie 2y
TheBookHippie @TheBookKeepers I‘m in that situation with the Chloe Gong books… 😵‍💫😫 otherwise yes I wait! 2y

The characters were all likeable and relatable. I enjoyed that the book shows you Black women back in 1910 standing up for themselves and following their dreams. I liked how the characters all got along, that there was not any sibling rivalry or friendship rivalry. This book was an easy enjoyable read with several strong women. If you like historical fiction I think you would enjoy this book. I would definitely read more books by this author.
