Pickpick

This was a fun and entertaining historical murder mystery set in 1889 London. Mikaela Forsythe is an unconventional “spinster” (at 24) who travels the world, pushing the envelope of how proper young ladies should behave (she enjoys a smoke, has taken self-defense instruction and is quite stubborn). Her married younger sister is missing, and Lennie‘s lady‘s maid turns up murdered. As Mikaela begins the search, her aunt (also unconventional) 🔻

robinb recommends hiring private investigator Angus Brodie, a mysterious former Metropolitan Police Inspector, who left under murky circumstances. As the two work together (sometimes grudgingly), they uncover a whole host of mayhem and danger culminating in a threat to royalty.
This strongly reminded me of Deanna Raybourn‘s Veronica Speedwell series as the leads shared some of the eccentric characteristics 🔻

robinb of Veronica and Stoker (along with a simmering chemistry). There are some great secondary stars as well. Number 2 drops later this month, and I plan to be on board for the next adventure. 4.25/5⭐️ #coverlove
