New York Times bestselling author Faith Erin Hicks says of Lightfall: Gorgeous artwork and a lovable heroine make Lightfall the series I wish I'd had as a kid. In the second installment of the award-winning, critically acclaimed Lightfall series, Bea and Cad continue their quest to stop Kest, the mythic bird who stole the sun. Perfect for middle grade fans of Amulet and Avatar the Last Airbender, Lightfall: Shadow of the Bird is another breathtaking journey into the magical world of Irpa, where epic battles and powerful creatures abound. After a battle that nearly cost them their lives, Bea and Cad awaken in the hidden settlement of the Arsai, mysterious creatures who can glimpse into the future. The Arsais vision paints a dire picture for their planet, as the bird Kest Ke Belenusnow awoken from a restless slumberthreatens to destroy all the Lights of Irpa. Desperate for a solution, Bea and Cad seek out the help of a water spirit known as Lorgon, whose ancient wisdom may help them find a way to take down Kest and save Irpa from utter destruction. But when their time with Lorgon presents more questions than answers, Bea and Cad must decide whats more important . . . stopping Kest or uncovering the truth. Every bit as good as the first book in the series! Come for the story, stay for the glorious art in this story about a girl, a Galdurian, & a cat racing to save their world from an ancient evil & looming darkness. Fantastic worldbuilding, a courageous heroine you can‘t help but root for, & an ending that leaves you wanting more…which, fortunately, it looks like we‘ll get next year. Perfect for readers who like fantasy & a good adventure.

When I realized the library had the second book I had to continue this adventure! Bea and Cad are on a new quest to stop the bird Kest from stealing the lights. But there are some mysteries to uncover along the way...
This world is more magical and gorgeous as we discover more of it in these pages. Bea's character development is lovely as well. I hope a third installment is written soon!🤞🏻

I loved the way anxiety was portrayed in the first Lightfall book and the second is doing just as well. Such a simple panel, but so true.

So good I've decided not to begrudge the fact that I am now firmly invested in a story which, based on the time span between volumes, I'll be waiting until 2024 to see the next chapter/final book (hopefully?). All whining aside, I'm still completely in love with the art, the empathy, the humour, the absolutely adorable characters that somehow manage to convey solemnity and anxiety with real weight despite being complete cinnamon rolls.

Have I mentioned how much I love 'tiny taciturn creature with mighty powers' as a trope? 🥰
