DISAPPOINTING GSFF AUG 23 book. Since when is GSFF teen romantasy?

Personal rating - you cheated me out of $50 - 1 ⭐️

Everything about this book felt YA, in that sense I feel it did a good job. Young girl on the run with secret dark magic … enemies to lovers kind of … teen dialog … Emily Post-like dark boarding school … nothing is fully explained (guess you need to buy book 2).

CONFLICTED

If it had been sold as YA Romantasy maybe - ⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

The story follows Quell who has lived her whole life on the run, trying to hide her dangerous, forbidden magic. The beginning started strong with Quell running from mysterious enemies. She seeks shelter in a magic school, and the pace slows right down. There is a plethora of tropes accompanied by a paucity of world building. I spent much of the time hoping the magic system would be explained rather than there being such a focus on the romance.

"I used to believe that magic was glittering, fanciful pretend. Then I realized magic is real. But it is dark and poisonous. And the only way to hide from it is to not exist at all."

I think this book lacked the proper world building it needed. It started out strong, I was liking the story, but then things weren't explained, and nothing was really happening. The middle was hard to get through because of it. It was also at that point that the romance I had previously been enjoying just fell flat. I didn't care anymore. But, the ending did wrap up some things and left me wondering what would happen next, but it was predictable.
