The Beast You Are
The Beast You Are: Stories | Paul Tremblay
9 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
A haunting collection of short fiction from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club, A Head Full of Ghosts, and The Cabin at the End of the World. Paul Tremblay has won widespread acclaim for illuminating the dark horrors of the mind in novels and stories that push the boundaries of storytelling itself. The fifteen pieces in this brilliant collection, The Beast You Are, are all monsters of a kind, ready to loudly (and lovingly) smash through your head and into your heart. In The Dead Thing, a middle-schooler struggles to deal with the aftermath of her parents substance addictions and split. One day, her little brother claims he found a shoebox with the dead thing inside. He wont show it to her and he wont let the box out of his sight. In The Last Conversation, a person wakes in a sterile, white room and begins to receive instructions via intercom from a woman named Anne. When they are finally allowed to leave the room to complete a task, what they find is as shocking as it is heartbreaking. The title novella, The Beast You Are, is a mini epic in which the destinies and secrets of a village, a dog, and a cat are intertwined with a giant monster that returns to wreak havoc every thirty years. A masterpiece of literary horror and psychological suspense, The Beast You Are is a fearlessly imagined collection from one of the most electrifying and innovative writers working today.

I really wanted to like this since Paul Tremblay's books are a favorite of mine. The first half of the book was enjoyable and creepy, but I wouldn't classify them as horror. They were more subtle and thoughtful than a monster jumping out of a closet. The last half of the book was a struggle for me and took me a long time to finish the book. I think there is a certain type of reader who will love this, but this wasn't my jam.

I read all the short stories before it got packed in the move. After the move, I could really only recall 1 or 2 of the short stories. I remembered them being moody, remembered them for their tone and his writing. I‘m in love with Paul‘s writing. After the move, I read the anthropomorphic novella that tells of our now human times. Sometimes writers hold up a mirror and it is ugly and fascinating. The novella alone makes the book a pick.

Addison_Reads Great review! I was beyond thrilled after finishing this collection because his last book, The Pallbearers Club, was so disappointing, but this reminded me why I love his writing. 13mo
Bookzombie Great review! I really to need to pick him up again. I have on read A Head Full of Ghosts. 13mo
Reggie @Addison_Reads Yeah, I was a little afraid after The Pallbearer‘s Club. The one story that remains with me in here is the man who draws chalk lines to go everywhere and the little boy erases them. And the animals. They hurt my heart. And he was really right on with the cult that infiltrated the government who then manipulated the system for their own gain all the while having a serial killer cat who had a podcast. Lol so crazy! 13mo

Reggie @Bookzombie so far it‘s only The Pallbearers Club that I‘d caution you against but what hell you might like it. There‘s some really positive reviews of it out there. Who knows? But if you don‘t like it I‘ll talk trash about it with you. Lol 13mo
Centique How was the move? Do you feel all settled in now? Hope it wasnt too stressful 💕 13mo
Reggie @Centique Hi, Paula. I do feel settled in. It‘s a matter of just moving my parents into their house now. Last week my dad called me to go check on my mom cause her sister had been on the phone with her and she said she started slurring her words. I got to their house and my mom could barely speak. She couldn‘t move her arms or her legs. I called the EMT‘s and it turns out her sugar was 27. She recovered and has felt better but we‘re all on alert 13mo
Reggie now. It really is the stress of the move for her. Other than that, which was super scary, everything has been fine. How bout your family? Kiddos and his elderliness ok? 13mo
Centique Oh my god! That is so frightening. Im glad she has recovered. Is she diabetic? My mum was diabetic so i remember thats a very high number! I hope their move goes ok. All good here. Had a scary week when a friend of mine went into hospital with sepsis, in a coma for 5 days, ended up with kidney and liver damage. 43 days in hospital! Being NZ that was free. Thank god as she has no insurance. 🤯 13mo
Centique His Elderliness is stable at the moment which is a big relief. I go in twice a week and help him eat lunch - but hes managing a knife and fork again anyway. Prob wont ever walk again. Very frail but well looked after 💕 13mo
Reggie @Centique what‘s crazy even with insurance her ER bill will start at $400 and that‘s not including what the ambulance ride is gonna cost. We‘re trash here in the US when it comes to human needs. And yeah, she‘s diabetic. I‘m glad your friend survived and hiselderliness is stable. 13mo

Tremblay's last book, The Pallbearers Club, was a big disappointment for me. However, this collection of short stories was much better and had some truly creepy, tense moments. 😬

It's weird, dark, and full of descriptive passages that left my skin crawling. Some stories are stronger than others, but overall this is a solid collection for horror fans.

bthegood Thanks for review - I also was disappointed with Pallbearers Club (it was a DNF for me) - I've stacked this one (getting ready for #Scarathon - 🎃) (edited) 1y

More like 3.5 stars
The author known for his ambiguous endings strikes again with this collection of short stories and one novella (the titular title) told in free verse of anthropomorphic animals living in an allegorical Trumpian world.
Not a fan of ambiguous endings, but somehow, Tremblay continues to draw me into his fascinating and bizarre worlds.

I can‘t believe it‘s already been a week since meeting Paul Tremblay at a book launch event for his latest book, The Beast You Are. Of course, as this was hosted by Water Street Bookstore, it was an amazing event!

Check out my full event recap here: https://www.ericarobynreads.com/meeting-paul-tremblay-at-water-street-bookstore/

vivastory It's hilarious & awesome that he wears that shirt now that he's officially had one of his book adapted (which I refuse to watch) 1y
ericarobynreads @vivastory right?! Haha! The crowd was asked who watched the movie and there were a few that raised their hands. But when the crowd was asked who read the book, many more raised their hands! 🤘❤️ 1y
