One of Tor.com's Can't Miss Speculative Fiction for Fall 2023 Listed in CBC Books Fiction to Read in Fall 2023 One of Kirkus Reviews' Fall 2023 Big Books By Small Presses One of CBC Books Best Books of 2023 In an alternate history in which the French never surrendered Detroit, children protect their own kingdom in the trees. In an alternate history of Detroit, the Motor City was never surrendered to the US. Its residents deal with pollution, poverty, and the legacy of racismand strange and magical things are happening: children rule over their own kingdom in the trees and burned houses regenerate themselves. When Gloria arrives looking for answers and her missing granddaughters, at first she finds only a hungry mouse in the derelict home where her daughter was murdered. But the neighbours take pity on her and she turns to their resilience and impressive gardens for sustenance. When a strange intuition sends Gloria into the woods of Parc Rouge, where the citys orphaned and abandoned children are rumored to have created their own society, she cant imagine the strength she will find. A richly imagined story of community and a plea for persistence in the face of our uncertain future, The Future is a lyrical testament to the power we hold to protect the people and places we lovetogether.

Bailedbailed

I don‘t think I‘ve ever bailed on so many books as this month. This is another one that started out great (a woman looking for her two granddaughters who went missing after their mother was murdered). Unfortunately it turned into a mix of dystopia, fantasy, and magical realism 😵‍💫
It was an audioread and maybe my English isn‘t good enough but I completely lost track of the storyline and frankly, I didn‘t bother, I just wanted it to be over.

Caroline2 It‘s CampLitsy syndrome. 😂 I‘m so excited about all the new books to look forward to that I‘m struggling to concentrate on my current reads. 8mo
BookWrym All the things you don‘t like make me want to read this 🤣 8mo

BarbaraBB @Caroline2 That could very well be it 🤣🤣 8mo
BarbaraBB @BookWrym I know! I like all those genres too but this mashup was too much for me. But it‘s probably me, the book won the Canada Reads! (edited) 8mo
Susanita Sometimes too much is TOO MUCH. 8mo
squirrelbrain Definitely sounds too much! 8mo
Suzze I started reading it because it was set in Detroit (where I live) and it won this year‘s Canada Reads (we get CBC tv here). I started it three months ago and am only 11% in. It never calls me. 8mo
BarbaraBB @Suzze It has all the ingredients to be fantastic and I know many people do think it is so it is probably my/our state of mind 😀 8mo
BennettBookworm I set a personal goal this year to DNF any books that weren‘t keeping my interest… and so far I have DNF‘d a LOT! 8mo
Suet624 You‘re my bailing hero. 8mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I always feel so stupid, bailing… 8mo
Suet624 I know. I get that. But sometimes it‘s just gotta be done. 8mo

I‘ll bet the library staff got a kick out of processing as many books as possible on Leap Day.

For the first sixty pages or so, I thought THE FUTURE was gonna be The One. Since then, though, it‘s skewed too abstract for my tastes and my attention‘s wavered in a big way. I would‘ve bailed if the Canada Reads panelists hadn‘t specifically said it gets rough but it all pays off in the end. Now, with a hundred pages to go, I hope I agree with them.

🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

My favourite NEVER wins #CanadaReads, and this year I REALLY didn't think it would (especially after the first two days of debates).

But it did!!! And I'm so excited!

The Future by Catherine Leroux, translated by Susan Ouriou is this year's #CanadaReads winner 🏆🎉 I LOVED this book. It is beautifully crafted and demands time, thought, and attention. In return it offers beauty, magic, and hard fought hope. Highly recommended!

BarbaraBB That seals it. I‘m off to buying it! 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @BarbaraBB ❤️❤️❤️ I hope you find as much love in its pages as I did! 9mo

The writing wasn‘t as gripping as one might hope but the atmosphere and ideas were amazing. In the depths of destruction, these characters do more than survive. These characters wring every ounce of life, joy, and community they can from a chaotic, grim reality. Even in despair, there is magic. #CanadaReads2024

I wanted to love this one. I should have loved this one. But I didn‘t. The fist 1/3 was great. Then part 2 happened and it went all Lord of the Flies. But without the good parts. She really lost me. When I finally got to the last 1/3, it improved again, but I wasn‘t interested anymore. It had so much promise. Maybe I was expecting too much. I thought it might be my favorite. It left me disappointed.

Absolutely phenomenal.

In an alternate, French Detroit, society is crumbling, nature is watching, children are living in a world of clashing imagination and reality in encampments in the forest. Gloria arrives to search for her granddaughters following the unsolved murder of her estranged daughter. As the community of adults, the community of children, and the community of nature begin to cross each others boundaries, change becomes possible

TheKidUpstairs Leroux's writing (and Ouriou's translation) is beautiful, poetic, engaging. A vein of magical realism runs through as nature reclaims, protects, and breaths alongside the world that men made and destroyed. This is writing you feel in your chest. These characters, whether adults, children, animals, or magic, are so genuine and deeply felt. This one will stay with me for a long, long time.

Gulp. Anyone else intimidated by long chapters?

jdiehr Yes! 11mo
TrishB Me too! 11mo
Birdsong28 Yes! 11mo
TheKidUpstairs Yes, usually! But I'm reading this one as a physical copy, and there's not so much “chapters“, but lots of breaks within parts. So, much less intimidating than books with REALLY long chapters, and few natural break points. 11mo
Suzze @TheKidUpstairs Yes, I noticed that once I got going. But I still like the chapters as they feel more like full stops instead of just pauses. 11mo

Canada Reads 2024 contenders have been announced! It's an interesting, diverse mix of genres, styles, stories, and champions. Tagged is the one I'm most excited about (and championed by Heather O'Neill? Amazing), but I'm going to read them all, and I could see Bad Cree or Denison Avenue usurping The Future for my top pick.

Anyone else reading the #CanadaReads selections this year?

Prairiegirl_reading Meet me at the lake? That‘s not a typical Canada reads pick at all! 11mo
LiseWorks I was listening to the Introductions this morning on the radio. I never read any of their books. P 11mo
JacqMac Those are the top three picks I‘m most interested in as well. The list is a little surprising this year. 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @Prairiegirl_reading yeah, I have a feeling that will be the first one out. 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @JacqMac It is a little surprising, but the Longlist was an odd one too, with what felt like lots of lighter contemporary fiction choices. I love a good light read, but it doesn't feel like there's much there for debate? I've started reading Denison Avenue and so far it's excellent, and I've heard nothing but good things about Bad Cree. But I've heard pretty meh reviews about Shut Up You're Pretty (1/2)... 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @JacqMac ...(2/2) and Meet me at the Lake, while I've heard it's a good read, doesn't feel like there's much there for debate and discussion. The Future sounds great, and the fact that Heather O'Neill is championing it just makes me more excited to read it. We'll see how it goes though, a solid debater can turn the tide! 11mo
janeycanuck I‘ve had Bad Cree on the shelf for ages so I‘ll move it up the list and Denison Avenue sounds interesting but the rest of the list doesn‘t really do it for me. 11mo
BookishTrish Ive read three so far and am very curious how they handle Meet Me At The Lake in the debates. I predict it gets voted off first. 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @BookishTrish which three have you read? I agree, I think Lake will be voted off first. 11mo
BookishTrish @TheKidUpstairs The Future, Bad Cree, Meet Me at the Lake so far. 11mo
