The Idiot Brain
The Idiot Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains What Your Head Is Really Up To | Dean Burnett
The brain may be the seat of consciousness and the engine of all human experience, but its also messy, fallible and disorganized. Its undeniably impressive, but its far from perfect, and these imperfections influence everything that humans say, do and experience. In The Idiot Brain, Dean Burnett celebrates the downright laughable things our minds do to us, as well as exposing the fact that people are often way off in their thinking about how the brain works. For example, did you know that your memory is egotistical? stress can actually increase your performance at a task? conspiracy theories and superstitions stem from your brains insistence that the world isnt random? the brains limitations mean you really can miss something thats right under your nose? the way the brains processing works means that time really does fly if youre having fun? alcohol can sometimes improve your memory? Dean Burnetts unpredictable and entertaining first book explores the unexpected side of everyday life, highlighting where conventional thinking is wrong and how our brains trip us up at every turn. This is lucid, funny and smart: in short, the best kind of popular science.

An overview of what we know about the brain and how it works.

Full of interesting tidbits and the author has a way with humorous metaphors and similes but somehow for me, it failed to really cohere. A diagram of the brain might have helped.

At this point I feel the book should be called The Idiot's Brain instead

While I should have been on a trip to visit my brother in Seattle right now, I can‘t really complain about my current situation. 😻 Hope all you Littens are happy, healthy and inside (if you‘re able). #huey #catsoflitsy

The perfect way to kick off a #Caturday; coffee, book and cats. This book has been both informative and entertaining so far. I‘ve laughed out loud several times which I did not expect to do, though maybe the title should have warned me this had a comical side to it. #catsoflitsy #lennox

My reading buddy #Sancho isn‘t feeling 100% today. Old age catches up with all of us, I guess ☹️

All the other books that I've got on the go at the moment were in other rooms so while I had 10 minutes spare I grabbed the nearest book to me. Great start. Really looking forward to the rest of this. Science for us non-science types. Huzzah!

RaimeyGallant Check out the new LitsyTips hashtag we started today. Lots of gems. :) It's the first post on my page, and then if you click the hashtag itself, you can see everyone else's tips. :) 7y

Extremely informative, totally hilarious, and probably one of my fav impulse buys. It's easy to read and hard to put down. I think I understand myself much better now, but then again, that could be a delusion...

A great overview of all the weird and wacky things the brain does, as well as misconceptions debunked. The dissection of the brain-as-computer analogy (re memory) is especially good.

This book begins the same way as nearly all my social interactions: with a series of detailed and thorough apologies.
[...]
My final apology is based on the fact that a former colleague of mine once told me that I'd get a book published "when hell freezes over." Sorry to Satan. This must be very inconvenient for you.

Highly recommend this book. It's such an interesting read combining humor and science. He uses technical terms without it being overwhelming or making it difficult to understand. And it shed some light on a lot of things. Especially helpful for anyone who works in customer service.
