The Main Character
The Main Character: A Novel | Jaclyn Goldis
7 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
A bestselling thriller author arranges a luxury train trip that is not what it appears to be in this electrifying modern homage to Agatha Christie from the author of the tense and twisty (Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author) The Chateau. Reclusive, mysterious author Ginevra Ex is famous for her unusual approach to crafting her big bestselling thrillers: she hires real people and conducts intensive interviews, then fictionalizes them. Her latest main character, Rory, is thrilled when Ginevra presents her with an extravagant bonusa lavish trip along Italys Mediterranean coast on the famed, newly renovated Orient Express. But when Rory boards the train, shes stunned to discover that her brother, her best friend, and even her ex-fianc are passengers, as well. All invited by Ginevra, all hiding secrets. With each stop, from Cinque Terre to Rome to Positano, it becomes increasingly clear that Ginevra has masterminded the ultimate real life twisty plot with Rory as her main character. And as Ginevras deceptions mount, and the lies and machinations of Rorys travel companions pile up, Rory begins to fear that her trip will culminate like one of Ginevras books: with a murder or two. In the opulent compartments of the iconic train, Rory must untangle the shocking reasons why Ginevra wanted them all aboardand to what deadly end. Another stylish and compulsively readable mystery from Jaclyn Goldis, this is the perfect read for fans of Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, and Paula Hawkins.

Agatha Christie-esque story.

Writer Ginevra Ex presents her latest Main Character (person she based her next murder mystery on) Rory with a trip on the Orient Express. Rory is over the moon, but gets suspicious when she meets her brother, ex-bestie, and former fiancé in the dining car. Is this going to be a real life recreation of Christie's novel?

The first half dragged, not entirely but definitely partly due to the 5 different POV, ⬇️

julesG unlikeable characters and an unnecessary romance side-plot. The second half is better paced, but (totally a me-thing) I saw the twists coming and the ending was no surprise to me. 3mo

Any thoughts about these? They all sound like juicy reads for summer. @Jerdencon @TheAromaofBooks @robinb

robinb They all sound intriguing. I‘d probably go with The Last Close Call or ETIGOVSD. But I haven‘t read any of them so I‘m good with the consensus. 😊👍 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh wow, these all sound great!! I'm leaning towards The Last Close Call, but the synopsis for each of these sounded really intriguing, so I'm genuinely fine with any of them!! 6mo
bookandbedandtea @Jerdencon Any strong feelings, Denise? 6mo
Jerdencon They are sound really good - but top two would be the last close call and every time I go on vacation 6mo
bookandbedandtea Everyone mentioned The Last Close Call so we'll go with that! 😁 @Jerdencon @TheAromaofBooks @robinb 6mo

Ginerva X, is famous for her unique approach to writing, she conducts in-depth interviews with real people and then fictionalizes them. Her latest main character is Rory, an unemployed news anchor. To celebrate the release of Ginerva‘s novel, Rory is rewarded with a luxury train trip through Italy. Of course secrets are revealed. I struggled to get into this one. All the characters are unlikeable. Thanks to NetGalley & Atria for the ARC.

A trip of the lifetime.

That is what Ginevra Ex wanted for Rory, Caroline, Nate, and Max.

She wanted them to experience a train trip through Italy and to bond with each other.

An interesting premise and beautiful writing, but I was lost most of the time. It was confusing and had too many characters to keep track of.

This is an Agatha Christie style murder mystery on a train. And it's fantastic. I liked her other book (The Chateau) but imo this was better.
