The Queen of Fives
The Queen of Fives | Alex Hay
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Nothing is quite as it seems in Victorian high society, in the twisty and compelling new novel from the author of THE HOUSEKEEPERS... A confidence scheme, when properly executed, will follow five movements in close and inviolable order: I. The Mark II. The Intrusion. III. The Ballyhoo. IV. The Knot. V. All In. There may be many counter-strikes along the way, for such is the nature of the game; it contains so many turns, so many endless possibilities... 1898. Quinn le Blanc, London's most talented con woman, has five days to pull off the seemingly impossible... to trap a nobleman into marriage - and lift a fortune from the richest family in England. Styled as the season's most enviable debutante, Quinn enters the inner circle of the corrupt, charismatic Kendals. But as she finds herself increasingly drawn into their mysterious orbit, Quinn realises that she may not be the only one playing a game of high deception. Praise for THE HOUSEKEEPERS: 'The perfect holiday read' Guardian 'Punch-the-air good' Kiran Millwood Hargrave 'Delightfully mischievous' The Times 'Imagine Ocean's 8 had an illegitimate baby with Fingersmith' Erin Kelly 'Impressive' Sunday Times 'Kept me hooked 'til the last page' Jennifer Saint

Bailedbailed

Annnnd I‘m bored. DNF at 16%. There‘s nothing inherently wrong with this book. The writing is fine, the characters are fine but “fine” isn‘t doing it for me at the moment and I can feel myself sliding toward a slump considering how each time I thought about picking this book up, I would go find something else to do. So putting it aside and moving on. This was my #bookspin for Feb. @TheAromaofBooks

Mehso-so

Themes: Oceans 11 meets Downton Abbey, Early 20th century London, Women settling scores

I read Alex‘s debut work in 2023 (“The Housekeepers”) and enjoyed it enough to be excited for his next book. As soon as I could I put a hold at my library for this and… -sad trombone- 🫠 It wasn‘t bad, I didn‘t consider bailing on it, but it wasn‘t amazing.

My #bookspin and #doublespin for February! It was kind to me this month because The Queen of Fives is a library book that I need to read and I was just about to pick up Shiver as a non-Christmas winter read. Can‘t make it into work today because of the snow so I‘m going to take advantage and get some reading done. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Enjoy!! 3d
