The Lost House
The Lost House: A Novel | Melissa Larsen
9 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
In Melissa Larsen's The Lost House comes the mesmerizing story of a young woman with a haunting past who returns to her ancestral home in Iceland to investigate a gruesome murder in her family. Forty years ago, a young woman and her infant daughter were found buried in the cold Icelandic snow, lying together as peacefully as though sleeping. Except the mothers throat had been slashed and the infant drowned. The case was never solved. There were no arrests, no conviction. Just a suspicion turned into a certainty: the husband did it. When he took his son and fled halfway across the world to California, it was proof enough of his guilt. Now, nearly half a century later and a year after his death, his granddaughter, Agnes, is ready to clear her grandfathers name once and for all. Still recovering from his death and a devastating injury, Agnes wants nothing more than an excuse to escape the shambles of her once-stable lifewhich is why she so readily accepts true crime expert Nora Carvers invitation to be interviewed for her popular podcast. Agnes packs a bag and hops on a last-minute flight to the remote town of Bifrst, Iceland, where Nora is staying, where Agness father grew up, and where, supposedly, her grandfather slaughtered his wife and infant daughter. Is it merely coincidence that a local girl goes missing the very same weekend Agnes arrives? Suddenly, Agnes and Noras investigation is turned upside down, and everyone in the small Icelandic town is once again a suspect. Seeking to unearth old and new truths alike, Agnes finds herself drawn into a web of secrets that threaten the redemption she is hell-bent on delivering, and even her lifediscovering how far a person will go to protect their family, their safety, and their secrets. Set against an unforgiving Icelandic winter landscape, The Lost House is a chilling and razor-sharp thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists that will leave you breathless.

Bailedbailed

Switched from the ARC to audiobook, then stopped at 23%, jumped to the end to get the solve. I can‘t stand messy main characters with drug or alcohol addictions. It‘s too “Girl on the Train” for me and it distracts from the murder mystery. I don‘t care and I don‘t want to listen to the whining or will I/won‘t I cave to pills. I want the hunt for the true killer and the search for the missing girl.

LeahBergen I find those characters irritating, too! 2w
DGRachel @LeahBergen I‘m glad I‘m not the only one. I really did try to keep reading because I loved the setting and wanted all the mystery, but all the descriptions of her addiction and her injuries that led to the addiction felt like more than half of the 25% I read. That‘s too much. 2w
Amor4Libros I‘m in the middle of that ARC, too and I‘ve put it down so many times…I feel like it is dragging! 😐 2w
Hooked_on_books That sucks. Doesn‘t sound like something I‘d want to read, either. I do love the cover, though. 2w
SilversReviews I was not a fan either. 1w

The Lost House moved at a slow pace in the beginning, but finished like a blizzard. A broken girl goes to meet a Podcaster in Iceland to reopen her grandmother's murder. Everyone in town thinks her grandfather did it, including her own father. On the 40th anniversary, another young woman disappears. A novel on grief, trust issues, and family bonds. 4 stars.

The Lost House

This is my first book by this author. I look forward to reading more.

This book was slow to start for me but it did pick up and the ending was great. The author definitely wrapped it up great.

I normally love murder mysteries set in Iceland. But this is just a normal mystery by an American (totally assuming this) that happens to be set in Iceland. And I clocked the killer way early. It was entertaining as far as standard mysteries go. Just don't expect it to be anything more than that.
