Among Friends
Among Friends: A Novel | Hal Ebbott
10 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
The announcement of a major literary debut: What begins as a celebration takes a sudden turn when a shocking betrayal shatters the trust between families. Its an autumn weekend at a comfortable New York country house where two deeply intertwined families have gathered to mark the hosts fifty-second birthday. Together, the group forms an enviable portrait of middle age. The wives and husbands have been friends for over thirty years, their teenage daughters have grown up together, and the drinks, dinners, rituals, and games that form their days all reflect the rich bonds between them. This weekend, however, something is different. An unforeseen curdling of envy and resentment will erupt into an unspeakable act, the ramifications of which are enormous. Accusations, denials, and shattered illusions follow, driving wedges between friends, spouses, children and parents, and exposing the treacherous fault lines on which these families have dwelt. Written with hypnotic elegance and molten precision, and announcing the arrival of a major literary talent, Hal Ebbotts Among Friends examines the aftermath of betrayal within the sanctuary of a defining relationship. It explores themes of class, marriage, friendship, and power, as well as the things we tell ourselves to preserve our finely made worlds.

This gets a terrible GR score so I wasn‘t sure if I even wanted to read it, but I‘m a list completist *and* it‘s a NetGalley book so I can tick off that review!

The writing was completely overwrought and flowery - and I nearly gave up after the first two paragraphs that I had to read twice (see above).

I can‘t make other comments without spoilers so I‘ll post those below. ⬇️

squirrelbrain There is a ‘big thing‘ referred to in the blurb, that turns out to be a middle-aged man sexually assaulting a teenaged girl - when written by a man (and particularly in the way this was written), this is really uncomfortable and distasteful. 7d
squirrelbrain There was one interesting ‘twist‘ that gave me pause for thought but then I had a further re-think. ⬇️ 7d
squirrelbrain It was the girl‘s father who believed that the long-term family friend had assaulted her and her mother didn‘t. At first, I thought that was a ‘brave‘ storyline but then thought it would have been, had the author been a woman, not a man. 7d

robinb Wow, those couple of paragraphs are a bit muddled for me. 😳 7d
Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad I knew the deal with this book before ever considering it, because that writing? Nope. That doesn‘t work for me at all. 7d
Lesliereadsalot Are you squirrelbrain on Storygraph? 7d
BarbaraBB Great thoughts. You‘re right about the consequences of the author being male. Until now I assumed that the author was female, which makes a difference in reading the book, I realize after reading your review. (edited) 7d
squirrelbrain Yes, it reads like an MFA student trying far too hard! @robinb @Hooked_on_books 7d
squirrelbrain Yes, that‘s me! @Lesliereadsalot 7d
squirrelbrain Maybe I‘m being a bit unfair @BarbaraBB - authors should be able to write about ‘other‘ lives to their own but this just gave me the ick. 7d
Lesliereadsalot I‘m new on there, msleslieg 7d
sarahbarnes Interesting - thanks for this review. I will probably skip this one. 7d

I was very excited to read this book based on reviews. The premise is great - two very privileged NYC families where the two fathers are long time best friends. Something happens to one of the children that is creates conflict among the two couples and the four individuals. It was very slow to read and the story line meandered around and resolving the conflict was dragged out. The writing is exceptionally good which saved the day for me.

BarbaraBB I felt the same 2w

#ToB26 #16

Two men have become friends at college. Turning 50, they still are. And so are their wives and daughters. During a weekend that the two families spend together something happens that changes everything. All of them have to decide what‘s true and what isn‘t and how to go on from here.

An interesting premise but the author needs way too many words to tell the story. That makes it
an okayish read but not a ToB-worthy one.

ChaoticMissAdventures That is a bummer, this was one of the ones that the synopsis sounded super interesting. 1mo
squirrelbrain Great review! I got this as an ARC, aaages ago but just never got round to reading it. Have you seen the terrible s ore it gets on GR? 1mo
Bookwormjillk Ok you convinced me to put this on my not unless it makes the short list pile 1mo

Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures If you plan to read this one, you may want to look at some of the GR reviews that detail what the “something” is that happens. It‘s because of that that I won‘t read this book. 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books oh thank you. I love Storygraph for this. I am with you. Thank you Barbara for taking one for the team. 1mo
Chelsea.Poole I have this on audio but maybe I won‘t prioritize it now. Thanks! 1mo
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain @Bookwormjillk @Hooked_on_books @Chelsea.Poole I am not on GR anymore. Storygraph has an average of three stars with which I agree. The something that happens is terrible but not as exploited as you might think. It‘s the shifting dynamics afterwards that that make the book dark and interesting. It‘s not bad, really, it might even be worth reading. It is just not good enough to be a TOB book. 1mo
sarahbarnes Glad to know your thoughts on this one. I‘ll probably skip it for now. 1mo

#WeeklyForecast 48/25

A #ToB26 week! I am reading and enjoying Lion and listening to Emperor of Gladness, which I am not enjoying at all. Next will be the tagged book, that everyone seems to hate but I already bought it and am curious to see what I‘ll think.
Forbidden Notebook (in Dutch) is my choice for #FoodAndLit (Italy).

ChaoticMissAdventures Oh no! I am really looking forward to Emperor. Lion looks very interesting, glad you are enjoying 1mo
LeahBergen I thought the tag book sounded good. I‘ll wait to see what you think! 😆 1mo
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures It‘s me I think. I don‘t like books about drugs and poverty (the combination). Lion is really good. 1mo

squirrelbrain Lion is one I couldn‘t get hold of easily - I shall have another look today….. 1mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB ah, then I can see why you‘re not enjoying Emperor. 1mo
merelybookish I loved Forbidden Notebook!! 1mo

Definitely not for everyone. Self-indulgent rich white people problems for sure! But I did love the writing, and the inner monologue of middle-aged married people is my cat nip. Stuff that people would never say out loud. Add complex adult friendship stuff, particularly the two male friends, since college, with their co-dependency and petty jealousies. When a single incident on a family weekend, disrupts the equilibrium, choices must be made.

BarbaraBB Great review. I have it on my shelves! 4mo
squirrelbrain I have the ARC of this but, of course, didn‘t get to it before pub date. Sounds fab! 4mo
KarenUK @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It has some VERY mixed reviews but it was just my kinda thing! And Helen, I feel like someone needs to invent a new word that means just that, to save some time! 4mo

A sharp cerebral telling of a friendship splintered by class and suspended in crisis. Some insights struck with force out of an impenetrable prose, others were tangled in thickly veiled meaning. I felt that the lack of rawness served as a barrier to feeling invested in the characters or story. 3 ⭐️

It‘s hard to like a book when you don‘t particularly like any of the characters and you‘re a hard no on the choices made. But this book is very well written and it does give you things to ponder when group friendships are so dear and treasured.

ChaoticMissAdventures I love the cover! 6mo
BarbaraBB I just bought this one. Glad you liked it! 6mo
marleed @ChaoticMissAdventures I totally read this one based on cover alone! 6mo
marleed @BarbaraBB It‘s a reminder of why I love to read fiction - pondering a fictional situation where IRL I‘d have a very strong opinion. 6mo
BarbaraBB Well said and I couldn‘t agree more! 6mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Intoxicating and insidious, “Among Friends” casts a spell of simmering, relentless tension, bringing power and group dynamics to a head. The prose could be considered overwritten at times, but it really felt like I was physically inside of each scene with these characters, holding my breath. 🎧
