The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health
The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health | Henry Whales
1 post
Social media has become an integral part of modern society, with millions of people using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok to connect with friends, family, and strangers across the world. While social media can have many positive effects, such as fostering social connections, it can also have negative consequences for mental health. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, especially among younger people. Social media platforms often present an idealized version of people's lives, leading users to compare their own lives unfavorably and feel inadequate. Additionally, the constant barrage of news, opinions, and notifications can be overwhelming, leading to stress and burnout. However, the relationship between social media and mental health is complex and multifaceted. While excessive use can have negative effects, social media can also be a valuable source of support, information, and community for people who are isolated or marginalized. Some studies have also found that social media use can improve well-being and reduce loneliness when used in moderation. Overall, the impact of social media on mental health is a topic of ongoing research and debate, and it is important for individuals to be aware of their social media use and take steps to manage it in a way that is healthy and balanced. #MentalHealthMonday

1. The 🌎 has been getting to me & that‘s been hard. Last week was rough & I took a social media break.
2. It‘s had a negative effect lately. I find it more upsetting than helpful.
3. I take periodic social media breaks & find it benefits my mental health.

AnnCrystal The world is a chaotic mess 🫂💝...try to look for the good, the hopeful, the inspiring. (edited) 1w
CatLass007 @Kerrbearlib Welcome back! I‘m glad you took care of you. 1) The only social media on which I am active is Litsy. It‘s a really wonderful and freeing thing to be able to do. I have not canceled my Facebook account because some friends and I communicate via Messenger. On Messenger it is possible to see what posts are made by specific friends. I actually was talking to a classmate from junior high and high school about three weeks ago (cont)⬇️ (edited) 1w
CatLass007 @Kerrbearlib @AnnCrystal for the first time in years. The things that we thought we knew, for example, the fact that she got me through chemistry because she was my lab partner, and I got her through chemistry because I was her lab partner was pretty much of a surprise to both of us.🤷‍♀️😂 She is an avid reader, and I encouraged her to join Litsy. But she also has decided to go back to college and she runs a nonprofit that she (cont)⬇️ 1w

CatLass007 @Kerrbearlib @AnnCrystal Another social media group is more than she wants to deal with right now. She asked me if I would be interested in reading the same book and then discussing it via Zoom meetings every week. That is so cool and it‘s going great! Although we don‘t seem to be talking about the book as much as we are just playing catch-up. So social media is no longer such high pressure, stress inducing nonsense. (edited) 1w

CatLass007 @AnnCrystal Isn‘t it?!! 1w
CatLass007 @Kerrbearlib @AnnCrystal Now if I can stop obsessing over the news, which is all bad or at least sounds bad, I will be really ahead of the game! 1w
