The Death of Bunny Munro
The Death of Bunny Munro: A Novel | Nick Cave
15 posts | 26 read | 11 to read
Set adrift by his wife's suicide and struggling to keep a grip on reality, Bunny Munro does the only thing he can think of: with his young son in tow, he hits the road. To his son, waiting patiently in the car while his father peddles beauty wares and quickies to lonely housewives in the south of England, Bunny is a hero, larger than life. But Bunny himself, haunted by what might be his wife's ghost, seems only dimly aware of his son's existence. When his bizarre trip shades into a final reckoning, when he can no longer be sure what is real and what is not, Bunny finally begins to recognize the love he feels for his son. And he sees that the revenants of his worlddecrepit fathers, vengeful ghosts, jealous husbands and horned psychokillersare lurking in the shadows, waiting to exact their toll. At turns dark and humane, The Death of Bunny Munro is a tender portrait of the relationship between a boy and his father, with all the wit and enigma that fans will recognize as Nick Cave's singular vision.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 97.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

I am sceptically aware of my own bias here because I love Nick Cave, but the more I think about it the more intelligent I realise the writing is. I loved it! Listening to the audiobook is definitely the way to go. It was like listening to a performance with the musical arrangements and sound effects. If your a Nick Cave fan and even if your not (and are not adverse to reading darker subject matter) I recommend listening to this book.

I love Nick Cave as a musician and lyricist, so the fact that he can write doesn‘t surprise me. However, the main character is tiresome and vile, and it was hard to keep reading. I would take breaks for weeks at a time just to get away from him.

This novel by Nick Cave (of NC & The Bad Seeds fame) features one of the most unlikable main characters ever- being with Bunny Munro the whole time nearly ruined the novel for me. He's got a 'joke' where he introduces himself to women he's hitting on and makes bunny ears wave on his head. So, technically, this was never funny, but I'll be charitable and say #ThatJokeIsntFunnyAnymore #JuneTunz @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Ha! He sounds like a total #douchewod 7y
Sue I have found Nick Cave writing incredibly pretentious. I bailed after about 10 pages of And the Ass Saw the Angel. Have you heard about the book of sickbag poetry he was supposed to be releasing? 7y
Billypar I loved the film The Proposition that he wrote the screenplay for so that led me to pick this one up. Wasn't enjoying it for most of the way, got a little better at the end but not enough to recommend. I know what you mean about the pretentious vibe. Didn't hear about the poetry collection.... Is 'sickbag' a style? 7y

Sue Apparently he has written a bunch of poetry on vomit bags while flying and was going to put them all into a book. The poems (hopefully not the vomit bags) 😂 7y
Billypar @Sue Oh geez... That would only occur to Nick Cave 😄 I hope the poetry isn't connected to the choice of paper. 7y
Sue You can say that again! 😊 7y

This is a hard book to like. It's vulgar, rude and disturbing. The anti-hero main character is completely unlikeable, but his descent into madness is truly tragic, and hilarious. Nick Cave from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds certainly has a way with words, and he makes you cringe while reading them.

I knew Nick Cave had a way with words, but I can say, I don't think I've read anything like this in a long time. It's been compared to American Psycho, and I can certainly see that with the vulgarity and way with words.

When you're reading a book by Nick Cave and his song, Red Right Hand comes on. Beautiful.

Saw Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds live this week. It was an intense, acoustically brilliant show, although the venue was too big for my liking. I prefer a more intimate Nick experience 😍. I loved this book (pictured here with my husband's guitar). I read it some years ago, and it meets the criteria for #redbooks #17booklove quite strikingly.

quirkyreader Lucky you. My favourite Nick Cave album is Murder Ballads. Coming in second was the box set with the acoustic version of the Murder Ballads. 🐸🐙 8y
Howardsimmons How was it? Also, I love Music Box. Def my favorite theater in Chicago. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @Howardsimmons It was amazing, but gutting, as he tries to come to terms with life after his son's death. Beautiful. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @quirkyreader I always change which is my favorite! Thank goodness there's so much to choose from. 8y
