Hillsborough - The Truth
Hillsborough - The Truth | Phil Scraton
9 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Hillsborough: The Truth was first published in 1999 to universal acclaim. Established as the definitive, unique account of the disaster in which 96 men, women and children died, hundreds were injured and thousands were traumatised, it details the appalling treatment endured by the bereaved and survivors in the immediate aftermath and the inhumanity of the identification process. The book reveals the inadequacies of the police investigations, official inquiries and inquests, and uncovers the systematic review and alteration of South Yorkshire police statements conducted with the approval of police investigators and Lord Justice Taylor's inquiry. It also examines the subsequent private prosecution and trial of two senior police officers in 2000. Using verbatim accounts, Scraton's analysis demonstrates the inadequacy of legal processes and the remarkable breadth of judicial discretion undermining and inhibiting such cases. Powerful, disturbing and harrowing, Hillsborough: The Truth exposes the institutional complacency that made a tragedy on this scale inevitable. It shows the law's failure to provide appropriate means of access, disclosure and redress for those facing the consequences of institutional neglect and personal negligence. And it tells how ordinary people suffer when those in authority sacrifice truth and accountability to protect their reputations. In this new edition, Scraton reflects critically on two decades of legal and policy reform, on the long-term consequences of media-hyped, untruthful allegations made against Liverpool fans, and on the continuing strugglesof the bereaved and survivors who have campaigned relentlessly for truth, acknowledgement and justice.

TrishB @GingerAntics awful, but so unsurprising....the establishment protects its own. May he rot wherever for his lies and deceit. 5y

David Duckinfield - the match commander whose failures played a huge part in the deaths of 96 people at Hillsborough - found not guilty of gross negligence manslaughter. An inquest ruled that 96 people were unlawfully killed, yet no one will ever be held responsible in a criminal court. Fuck British 'justice'. I'm beyond furious. JFT96.

MicheleinPhilly 😡I was unfamiliar with this case prior to reading about it in a David Jackson book earlier this year. I was pleased to see that he would stand trial again but am so sorry this was the result. 5y
TrishB Haven‘t stopped crying yet 😢 so desperately sad for the families. 5y
arlenefinnigan I know we shouldn't be surprised, but still. How can no one be held criminally accountable for 96 deaths that have been ruled to be unlawful killings? 5y

Cinfhen I‘m only aware of this terrible miscarriage of justice because of @arlenefinnigan 🙌🏻💚Great choice, Trish!! How‘d your son‘s interview go??? 6y
arlenefinnigan Excellent choice. I have something similar to follow x 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen he thinks it went ok, but after the interview he decided he didn‘t want the job!! It‘s working in an MPs office, but basically just in admin, not any political stuff. 6y
Cinfhen Good on him that he realized the job wouldn‘t be a good fit!! But now back to the drawing board 😕 6y

BarbaraBB This must be so interesting! 7y
arlenefinnigan @BarbaraBB this came out nearly 20 years ago, when telling the truth about Hillsborough really wasn't at all fashionable. Thank God the campaigners didn't give up when people were telling them to let it go and move on. 7y
