Good Time Coming: A Sweeping Saga Set During the American Civil War (First World Publication)
Good Time Coming: A Sweeping Saga Set During the American Civil War (First World Publication) | C S Harris
8 posts | 2 read | 18 to read
I killed a man the summer I turned thirteen . . . Thus begins C. S. Harris s haunting, lyrically beautiful tale of coming of age in Civil War-torn Louisiana. Eleven-year-old Amrie St. Pierre is catching tadpoles with her friend Finn O Reilly when the Federal fleet first steams up the Mississippi River in the spring of 1862. With the surrender of New Orleans, Amrie s sleepy little village of St. Francisville strategically located between the last river outposts of Vicksburg and Port Hudson is now frighteningly vulnerable. As the roar of canons inches ever closer and food, shoes, and life-giving medicines become increasingly scarce, Amrie is forced to grow up fast. But it is her own fateful encounter with a tall, golden-haired Union captain named Gabriel that threatens to destroy everything and everyone she holds most dear. Told with rare compassion and insight, this is a gripping, heart-wrenching story of loss and survival; of the bonds that form amongst women and children left alone to face the hardships, depravations, and dangers of war; and of one unforgettable girl s slow and painful recognition of the good and evil that exists within us all."

Bailedbailed

First, I need to say that I fully expected to love this book. I'm into historical fiction and interested in the Civil War period in particular. I was very surprised that this was a total miss for me. I didn't finish this book - read one third. Read my goodreads review to find out why. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1776676626

Reecaspieces So sorry you didn't enjoy it. I bailed on one last week that was in my favorite time period. Sad to expect more...but this is life! Good luck on your next one! 7y
DGRachel This makes me sad. I love her Sebastian St. Cyr series. I'm sorry this one was such a miss. 😢 7y
annahenke @DGRachel I've heard those are good. Maybe this just isn't her genre. Or maybe it's just me. This book has a really high rating on goodreads so that could be the case. 7y

Pickpick

Finished! A well-researched historical novel, showing the story of both rich & poor, white & black, young & old women in the South persevering through the hardships and cruelty of the Civil War after all the men go off to fight.

Halfway through the book. Realizing if it's dark tonight at 7, it will be dark tomorrow at 6. 😩Drinking Frankenstein Spiced Ginger Pumpkin Black Tea. And using the cup I won when Oprah was starting her OWN channel. #booksandtea #novemberland

Graciouswarriorprincess Wow! I need that tea! It sounds great! 8y
Suzze @Graciouswarriorprincess It came in the Halloween LitCube. Yum. 8y
Bostonmomx2 Earlier dark means we can go to bed and read earlier and not feel guilty because it's still sunny out lol 8y

100 pages in and loving it. The first chapter had so many adjectives that I almost quit. But now I'm really interested to see where it is going. Tink approves. #catsoflitsy

Zelma 😻 I didn't know your kitty's name. My first cat was Tink as well. Such a sweetie. 8y
Suzze @Zelma When I got her, her name was Tia. She didn't look like that to me. I had heard cats really just hear the first sound of their name, so I kept the T. 8y

I so love being grabbed like this and dragged into a book! Super opening paragraph.

DogMomIrene "Wow!" Is right. Just screenshot your post to share with my social studies students. We're studying Reconstruction, so I like trying to get them to read other books outside of class. They still have so many questions about the Civil War, so I think this will grab them. 8y
GlitteryOtters Dang...! That opening just sold me on it (adding to TBR list...thanks!!) 8y
