Island Home
Island Home: A landscape memoir | Tim Winton
'I grew up on the world's largest island.' From his childhood, Tim Winton's relationship with the landscape around him - Australia's swamps and bush, rockpools, seacaves and scrub - has been as vital as any other connection. Whether camping in hidden inlets, walking in the high rocky desert fringe, or diving at Ningaloo Reef, Winton has felt the place seep into him - its rhythms, its dangers, its strange sustenance. Island Home is the story of how that relationship with the landscape came to be. Charged with love for the huge, besieging force of Australia's wild spaces, this book is a passionate call for their conservation, a memoir that urges us all to feel the ground beneath our feet. Tim Winton's Land's Edge: A Coastal Memoir, is also available from Picador.

Wonderful Austalian author Tim Winton has a lovely mix of memoir and nature writing of the land #downunder.

Pictured here with the adorable and incredibly dangerous blue ringed octopus. 😁

Soubhiville @mreads why is this kind of octopus dangerous? Just more aggressive? It certainly is beautiful! 5y
mreads @Soubhiville They have enough venom to kill twenty-six adult humans within minutes. something like 10,000 more potent than cyanide 😯. And apparently they are small and cute. 5y
Soubhiville Oh! That‘s a little scary! I didn‘t realize there were venomous octopuses! 5y

mreads @Soubhiville I love octopuses but they are definitely an animal I want to admire from a distance. 5y
Cinfhen Wow!! That‘s crazy @mreads I never realized how readily an octopus could be. #LiveAndLearn 5y
mreads @Cinfhen If you see one don't poke it or try for a selfie. Haha😁 5y
BarbaraBB Tim Winton! Good one. I loved his 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Interesting fact about the octopus! 5y

My best non-fiction reads of 2017.

DrexEdit I have a friend who that radio book would be perfect for! 😊 📻 6y
ReadingEnvy @DrexEdit as long as they don't mind graphic novel style! 6y

I honestly could barely get through a chapter without falling asleep. Memoirs are really not my thing, especially when they have no real plot and are super repetitive like I felt this was. Now I have to write an essay without having actually finished it 😩😩😩

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Long time Tim Winton hater over here! ✌️ (never recovered from reading Lockie Leonard) 7y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this exploration of how landscape effects us. Tim Winton's island home is the often overlooked area of Western Australia. He looks at the history of the area in vignettes from his own life, and his writing transports the reader to an unusual place of decreasing wildness.

shawnmooney Sounds great! @Trav highly recommended a couple of his novels to me when we met in Tokyo last year, and I definitely plan to get to at least one of them this year. I've never read anything by him yet. 7y
Soubhiville Sounds good to me too! Stacked 🙂 7y
MrsMalaprop Have this on my bedside TBR. Am a massive fan & live in Western Australia. Read his memoir recently. ❤ 7y

saresmoore Ooh, this sounds wonderful! 7y
andrew61 It sounds great jenny, another author whose name i keep hearing but haven't read. Have you read 'Songlines' by Bruce Chatwin it's a really interesting book about the aboriginal experience in Australia. 7y
ReadingEnvy @MrsMalaprop oh I would love to hear if it resonates with you. For me the landscape was strange and beautiful but unfamiliar. He is someone I need to read more of for sure. 7y
ReadingEnvy @shawnmooney I want to read his novels too. He's slightly on my radar but I haven't read his fiction. 7y
ReadingEnvy @andrew61 I haven't read the Chatwin but want to. I spent a year reading from Oceania but pretty much skipped Australia, so much more to read. 7y
MrsMalaprop @andrew61 I've read Songlines. Hard work and fascinating is what I recall about it. Have read most of Tim Winton's books. The Riders is my favorite, although I think this might be his only novel not set in Australia. If you're looking for Oz setting then Dirt Music is worth a try 😊. (edited) 7y
andrew61 There was a recent episode of a radio 4 book prog in which Charlotte wood and helen garner were discussing Australian fiction, I've not read them nor Elizabeth harrower, have you and if so any suggestions. I have daughters of mars in tbr list , and have enjoyed Peter Carey and Kate Grenville, makes me want to have an Australian book tour. 7y
ReadingEnvy @andrew61 I haven't read those you mention, only Peter Carey and Richard Flanagan. I've probably read more from NZ! 7y
andrew61 Id forgotten Richard Flanagan, which was brilliant. 7y

My current read - I started this one while at the coast this week, you can see why! I had hoped to have it finished in time to start 2017 with a fresh book, but never mind. What book will you start your year with? HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! #thatcover #australianauthors
