They‘re insightful however I‘m somewhat disappointed. A handful of them stood out for me - Nineteen Fifty-Five, The Lover, The Abortion, and Laurel; the others weren‘t so impressive.

so-soSome of these were great while others fell flat. Race, gender, relationships....these three themes are pretty consistently and thoughtfully included.
pickAlice Walker. I mean what more can a person say. This collection has all the things you could want. Social commentary, humor (the first story has really stuch with me), sadness and just pure great writing.

So after I wrote out my #januarytbr for book clubs and for the poetry challenge, I looked around my TBR and my bookshelves for other books that work well for January. I decided to go with a feminist protest theme to commemorate the Women's March last year. I think these books may help fire me up for the fight to come.

This was an eye opening book, it was brave and honest, imparting knowledge about the realities of being black women in a way only Walker can. This was an eloquent discussion about race, class and gender that I fully adored. #feminism
pickOH MY LANTA. This is so good. She writes in such a subtle way about what it means to be a black woman in America. I have no direct knowledge of the experience personally, and I'm sure she doesn't speak for all, but it's opening my eyes further into what intersectionality means
This is why I love used books. I may just be creepy, but I wonder about the people who owned this before me. There are all kinds of notes and scribbles in here, and it's simply gorgeous.
pickI really enjoyed this collection of short stories, especially the one with the man who becomes crippled and the one about skiing. It took me a long time to finish reading it in it's entirety.
