Late entry for #ReadingAfrica2022 #Angola 🇦🇴 @barbarabb @Librarybelle
4⭐I enjoyed how Agualusa introduced small incidents which became significant later on, providing multiple perspectives of the same episode to build a fuller understanding of the intersection of different lives. However, I often forgot which perspective belonged to which character, though that's more due to my own concentration issues rather than any problem with the writing.

Librarybelle Sounds interesting! 1y
BarbaraBB I read this one too. Good choice for the prompt. 1y

"General Theory" is a book I ordered months ago for #Angola ?? in #ReadingAfrica2022, so it's a bit late for that, but still sounds interesting so I will read it.
I ordered volume 3 of the Dune: House Atreides graphic novel as the first two were engaging enough for me to want to complete the series.
Divided States of Hysteria is a random pick, which could be excellent or terrible - I'll have to see ?

Bookwomble @dabbe If I tell you it has a slug of Kahlua in it, would that make it better or worse? 😁 1y

BarbaraBB I read it for #ReadingAfrica2022 too but I don‘t remember much 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB I read your review: you liked it, but you thought there were too many side characters and wished the author has focussed more on his MC 😊 1y
dabbe @Bookwomble Add some Baileys, too, and I'm all for it! ❣️🤣❣️ 1y
BarbaraBB thank you😀, was I right? I still don‘t have a clue though. I read it one night in the hospital where my father was dying. I think I wasn‘t that focused 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB Sorry to hear of your loss, Barbara ❤️ That would surely be enough of a distraction. My dad died last year, too, and my use of books as a coping mechanism meant I read more in '22 than ever before. 1y
Bookwomble @dabbe Ha! My mum got Mrs B hooked on coffee and Bailey's for a while 😄 1y
BarbaraBB I can relate to that. It is my coping mechanism too - except for those few weeks in the hospital. I remember your dad passing away too in ‘22. It‘s hard. ❤️ 1y
dabbe @Bookwomble 🤣🤣🤣 1y

Concerning Violence: Fanon, Film, and Liberation in Africa, Selected Takes 1965-1987 | Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Gran Olsson, Sophie Vukovic

Mehso-so

This book uses the writings of political philosopher Frantz Fanon alongside still photos of documentary footage and some interviews to look at violence in African countries shaking off the yoke of colonialism. Great idea, but I feel like this wasn‘t executed well. Adding detailed captions to the photos would have made this so much better.

Librarybelle That‘s a shame! 1y
Caterina Bummer! I loved the documentary, which I watched after finishing The Wretched of the Earth. I didn't know this book existed! Do you think it'd still be worth it for me to get my hands on? 1y
Hooked_on_books @Caterina I do suspect it will be a lot more meaningful for those who have seen the film, which I think would give it context. If you‘d like, I could send it along to you. (edited) 1y

In 1905, the King appoints a young small business owner to be governor of #SaoTomeandPrincipe based solely on some articles he‘s written against colonial slavery. Although a lover of comfort and ease, Luis agrees to take on the white plantation owners who claim their black labor force are free to return to Angola, a lie given they now live on an island without means to go back. Against all odds, Luis tries his best so the world will know that ⬇️

Texreader Portugal has truly eliminated slavery. This book tells about his two-year assignment and how he fares. It is magnificently written and beautifully translated. There are a few explicit sex scenes, but I didn‘t feel the circumstances were unbelievable or the writing overly dramatic. Living cut off from the world as Luis was, I am surprised it didn‘t consume more of the book! Strong recommendation to seek out this beauty. #readingafrica2022 1y

I‘m done (review to come), but I did it! I‘ve read a book for every country in Africa! I just finished this excellent book about slavery in #SaoTomeandPrincipe. What an accomplishment! #readingAfrica2022

DGRachel Awesome! I bought this book but didn‘t get to it. 😔 1y
Texreader @DGRachel It‘s super dense at the beginning and a bit hard to get into. But it is really good. So hang on to it! 1y

In the next chapter of the tagged book I‘m meeting the British Consul to be posted to #SaoTomeandPrincipe. He rose to illustrious heights in civil service in #India, which I‘m now reading all about. So I‘m reading another appropriate book in the few remaining days left in November for #foodandlit. What a lovely coincidence. #readingafrica2022

I‘m sad to say I‘ve spent most of Thanksgiving feeling poorly. I did have a little bit of turkey and sides but that just turned my stomach almost immediately. On the good side, when not sleeping or nauseous, I‘ve made progress with this book and I love it. The “dandy” is now governor of #SaoTomeandPrincipe with the mission to ensure slavery no longer exists in this Portuguese colony at the turn of the 20th century. It‘s beautifully written. ⬇️

Texreader The translation is extraordinarily well-done, capturing the descriptions of this tropical world. The governor has now visited all the cocoa plantations on the islands and isn‘t convinced that slavery has been abolished. I wish this book were more widely available, and I think it would be a brilliant movie. Halfway done, so all this may go awry. I read one Litsy review about an overly dramatic romance. We shall see if I agree. #readingafrica2022 1y

Texreader @shortsarahrose @Librarybelle @Catsandbooks @Aimeesue Thank you all for your well wishes. Yesterday I finally had a day without stomach pains so I‘m hoping I‘m past it. It was a rather miserable Thanksgiving for various reasons but I may recreate the meal with a Turkey breast and dressing so I can enjoy my favorite meal of the year. 1y

I‘m not far at all but here‘s the fascinating premise: a Portuguese playboy who has dabbled a bit in politics by writing a couple of articles for the newspaper has come to the attention of King Carlos who wants to appoint him as governor of #SaoTomeandPrincipe. The new governor is to convince the nosy British that the cocoa productions there are not using Angolan slave labor. What a task for an apparent ne‘er-do-well! #readingafrica2022
