pickA semi-autobiographical coming of age story set in #Thailand.
The main character “Justin” lives with his aunts and servants, and refuses to speak his native tongue. After his pet chameleon dies he decides to become a chameleon himself, learning his language, eating Thai food, and making friends.
Overall I enjoyed this, but there is a lot about discovering sex, and the MCs are 12/13 which made it a bit uncomfortable at times…

pickThis is my first Jo (pronounced kind of like You) Nesbø (pronounced Nesbur without the r), thanks to husband‘s Norwegian pronunciation guide. I point this out because the infamous Harry Hole isn‘t pronounced like Americans would. The book was very good & kept me interested. The ending was very good (quite complex) albeit very gory. However, I was confused by what happened with the “wacker” at the end, & no idea who the epilogue was about. ?
Well, that would be difficult to find someone‘s abode!

Bangkok Wakes to Rain is my pick for #FoodandLit this month. This is my first time listening to an audiobook. The narrator is overly dramatic, which is distracting.

pickI loved her NF (on Orwell and Burma) and loved this new novel too.
The books opens with the state opening an empty shopping container, and denying any bodies have been found. This is a narrative with multiple viewpoints, from across Bangkok society including an expat bored housewife, a slum landlord and a foodstall-owning senior. The subsequent discovery of a mass grave in a patch of "jungle" in urban Bangkok has everyone on the move.
.....Gazing wearily at the nation, he appeared to ad lib as he took off his spectacles and said in a more casual, almost avuncular tone, 'So it's best that you all go about your own business now and forget this incident. There's no more to be known and nothing else to see. Nothing, nothing at all.'
so-soI think I‘m the first on litsy to review this book and unfortunately I wasn‘t sold on it.
This is book 5 in John Burdett‘s series about a Thai detective in Bangkok and this time he‘s investigating illegal organ transplants. It‘s a fast read and I don‘t think I would have bothered if I hadn‘t read the other 4. I starting reading them while I was living in Thailand.
