The Last of the Mohicans | James Fenimore Cooper

Pickpick

Packed with adventure! Set during the French and Indian War, the book contains some pretty brutal scenes. I appreciated that one of the main characters was a strong female, especially for a book written in 1826. But the writing also reflects attitudes towards women and Native Americans that were prevalent at that time. Seen as a period piece, the storytelling is excellent, with a strong sense of time and place. ⬇️

julieclair I enjoyed reading this for #KindredSpirits with @BarbaraJean . 1d
BarbaraJean It was so interesting to see the combination of “of-the-time” stereotypes with some more nuanced depictions of Native culture than I‘d have expected, plus a fairly strong female protagonist (even though I felt like Cora‘s characterization weakened as the book went on). I hated the ending, though!! (edited) 14h
julieclair @BarbaraJean I agree about the ending. 11h
