Martin Chuzzlewit | Charles Dickens

In Chapter 5, we see more of Tom Pinch‘s sweetness and generosity when he meets Pecksniff‘s new pupil—none other than young Martin Chuzzlewit! Tom immediately takes to him and is unperturbed to find himself crowded uncomfortably into the carriage with Martin‘s luggage. My favorite part is Tom‘s visit to the bookstore: “all those rows on rows of volumes, neatly ranged within—what happiness did they suggest!” (78). Tom‘s a reader!!❤️

Cuilin I love Tom Pinch!!!! Such a kind sweet man. 🩷 1d
Sparklemn Tom‘s generous spirit is under appreciated by his employer and pupils, I fear. (edited) 19h

I was just telling a fellow reader about how funny Dickens is, and then reading Dickens, he gave me this: “and cause him to exhibit the soles of his shoes to the object of his dearest wish”

Having ridden boats in the Venice canals I can imagine that fall! 😂

And yes I‘m still slowly reading this one. #whattheDickens @Cuilin

Ruthiella I always forget how funny Dickens is! 3d

Dickens‘ tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the Pecksniff daughters are so droll! “Miss Pecksniff . . . was all girlishness, and playfulness, and wildness, and kittenish buoyancy . . . Moderately buxom was her shape, and quite womanly, too; but sometimes—yes, sometimes—she even wore a pinafore; and how charming that was!” (22-23). This is an eye roll in text form! 😂😂 #WhattheDickens
“It was perfectly charming, and worthy of the Pastoral age, ⬇️

CindyMyLifeIsLit to see how the two Miss Pecksniffs slapped each other after this” (26). So funny! 😂 (edited) 6d

#WhatTheDickens Martin Chuzzlewit

I got so lost in Little Dorrit that I decided to be a touch more academic and do some character research. I found this little gem on course hero!!!

RamsFan1963 Martin Chuzzlewit actually exists?? I'm reading The Eyre Affair, and the Dickens novel is a major part of the plot, but I'd never heard of this book so I assumed the author made it up. I learn something new every day on Litsy. 1w
Cuilin @RamsFan1963 well now I need to look up The Eyre Affair. 😊 1w
Sparklemn @Cuilin This chart is proving to be useful. Thanks for finding it! 2d
Cuilin @Sparklemn You‘re welcome. I‘m referring to it too. 2d

#WhatTheDickens Martin Chuzzlewit Chapter Two

I‘m enjoying it so far, the writing is both beautifully descriptive and also mocking as though the writer and the reader are in on a little secret. 🤫

Sparklemn Great description. Like the author is giving the reader a little wink. 😉 (edited) 7d
CindyMyLifeIsLit I loved the extended personification of the wind in the second chapter! It‘s sighing, blustering, banging, grumbling, bullying, and finally howls off to attack the fallen leaves, sending them “whirling round and round upon their thin edges, taking frantic flights into the air, and playing all manner of extraordinary gambols in the extremity of their distress” (20). After knocking Mr. Pecksniff down, it roared out to sea, ⬇️ 6d
CindyMyLifeIsLit “where it met with other winds similarly disposed, and made a night of it” (21). 🌬️💨 6d
Cuilin @CindyMyLifeIsLit I‘m loving the imagery too. I could feel the wind and hear the leaves. 🍂 6d

repost for @Cuilin

#WhatTheDickens

This novel follows the young Martin as he navigates the world of hypocrisy and fraud. It is described as a satirical novel on selfishness. Who‘s in?

Daisey I hope to read or more likely listen to this one. I want to work on finishing Tombland first, and I‘m still waiting on the delayed release of the Dickens audio collection I preordered. If they don‘t change it again, it should be available by the time I‘m ready. 1w
Cuilin @Daisey I think the release date is 9/4? I‘m waiting for it too. 1w

CindyMyLifeIsLit I‘m in! 👏👏👏 (edited) 1w
Cuilin @CindyMyLifeIsLit Fabulous. This is a new read for me. 1w
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Cuilin Me as well! I‘ve read several Dickens (and taught a couple), but not this one. Very excited to dive in! 😊 1w
Daisey @Cuilin That sounds right, but I quit paying too much attention to the new date after they changed it like 3 times. I do want to use it for this one! 1w
CSeydel Oh I‘ve been wanting to read this one! I‘m in the middle of Adam Bede right now and I‘d rather finish it first before starting this one. I‘ll see how soon I get through the Eliot - maybe I‘ll be able to start Martin soon enough to catch up to you all 1w
Lcsmcat I‘m in! As much Dickens as I‘ve readI somehow missed this one, so it‘s a new read for me too. 1w
TheBookHippie Oh I‘ve never read this! I‘ll get a copy! In! 1w
Cuilin @CSeydel I‘ve Adam Bede n my TBR. Love Elliott!! Jump in whenever you can. 👍 1w
Cuilin @Lcsmcat I had to do some research on this one. It‘s not a well-known novel of his. 1w
Cuilin @TheBookHippie yay!! 🙌 1w
CSeydel @Lcsmcat Same … I actually checked it out from the library earlier this year because a character in a different book I was reading referenced it, and I had never read it. (I think it may have been Jasper Fforde‘s Tuesday Next?) But I didn‘t manage to get to it then. 1w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin something about classic literature and my brain - it‘s very calming. 1w
Cuilin @TheBookHippie it seems to be the only thing working for me with “gestures around at everything” 1w
BookwormAHN I'm looking forward to it 😺 1w
Cuilin @BookwormAHN same 👍 1w
quietjenn I've but read this one so will try to give it a go! 1w
Cuilin @quietjenn Fabulous. 1w
Sparklemn I‘m in! 1w
Cuilin @Sparklemn wonderful!! 1w
CindyMyLifeIsLit Is there some sort of schedule or protocol for these reads? 4d
Cuilin @CindyMyLifeIsLit it‘s a read at your own pace and comment or post whenever you like. I personally am doing a chapter a day and that should take me right into mid October. 4d
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Cuilin Okay, thanks! 4d

I‘ve been reading way too many books at a time that I‘ve let this one linger. So long in fact that I‘ve forgotten who Mrs General was. So I found this great web page:

https://www.charlesdickensinfo.com/novels/little-dorrit/little-dorrit-characters...

#whattheDickens @Cuilin

Susanita I hate when that happens! 1w
Lcsmcat I had to do that for War and Peace. Too many characters to keep straight when reading slowly! 1w
Cuilin I found this Dickens hard to pay attention to. I could blame the fact that I was distracted with other reads but there is something about it that just didn‘t draw me in like others. 1w

'Why, bless my life and soul!' said Mr. Omer, 'how do you find yourself? Take a seat. - Smoke not disagreeable I hope?'

'By no means,' said I. 'I like it - in somebody else's pipe.'

'What, not in your own, eh?' Mr. Omer returned, laughing. 'All the better, sir. Bad habit for a young man. Take a seat. I smoke, myself, for the asthma.'

(from Chapter 30, 'A Loss')
