I really loved this book! I also love Amor Towles‘ writing style. It was a fun visit to 1930‘s NYC and I hope he writes another book soon!
Side note: I found playing Majong on my phone is a perfect, brainless, game to play while listening to an audiobook. 📚

Wow. His writing is amazing. I lose myself in his words every time. Working girl Kate Kontent finds herself swept up in the glitz and glamour of 1930s NY. There she makes friends, finds love, experiences heartbreak and the excess of the idle wealthy at the end of the depression. I loved it. 💰💰💰💰💰

SauerPatch I‘ve been considering adding this to my TBR. As I recall I had mixed feelings about A Gentleman in Moscow, but the writing, I remember, was indeed lovely. 2mo

I loved this book. The writing is gorgeous and the characters, especially Katey Kontent, are so multi-dimensional that they stay with you long after reading. Towles is a master at creating a sense of place, so Manhattan in the late 1930s became almost another character. It made me wish I could experience NYC like it was back then.

This audiobook takes the listener back to 1930s New York City, and does a fantastic job of it. The language and scenery feel completely authentic. I was dazzled by the narrator, Rebecca Lowman, who couldn't have done a better job, and I was engaged from beginning to end. Rules of Civility is a winner.

Overall rating: 4.54 stars

This book was fun. It really took me to 1930s Manhattan.. full of martinis and cab rides, department stores and jazz. It was ‘lighter‘ than I was expecting, and rather than depth the characters had a more cinematic quality. Nostalgically tinged glamour for a bygone age was oozing from the page, in just the way Mad Men did for the 1950s.

I adored this book when I read it late last year....

We first meet Kathy Kontent in ‘late middle age‘ attending an opening evening at MOMA, having clearly led a charmed life. However we go back in time to 30 years before where we see her sneaking into bars through the back door, hustling and a bit of stealing. There follows the story of how she got from there to here.....

I could be wrong here, because I read this book years ago when it was first published so my memory is fuzzy, but I seem to remember that one of the most vivid parts of RoC for me was Katey Kontent‘s job as a switchboard operator. For some reason, the image was just so intriguing and vivid to me. All these women just lined up in a room taking phone calls.

A look back to a glamorized NYC in 1938, this novel exudes a stylish prose, with the help of George Washington‘s Rules of Civility. A chance encounter on New Year‘s Eve in 1937 with Tinker changes Katey forever. This was enjoyable. Not very deep, and definitely more character driven than setting based. My historical fiction book group likes it too!

Anitareads I love Agatha Christie! When I was in high school I was reading her a lot. I think it might be time for a re-read ☺ 10mo
