Someone's Listening | Seraphina Nova Glass

This is a hard one to review. While I enjoyed the mystery (what happened to Liam, who was sending threatening messages to Faith), I really didn‘t like Faith as a character. Her constant disregard for safety & listening to the police and her lawyer‘s advice, & her excessive drinking and self-medicating, I wanted to shake her & tell her to make better choices. However, I did go back & forth between who could be behind it all & that was a lot of fun.

A fictional story based on true events of the Des Moines paper boys that went missing in the early to mid-80‘s. Told from three perspectives of a young boy Sammy, his 18 year old sister and the main detective investigating the case, the reader pieces together a horrible story of kidnapping and pedophillia. Tough subject matter but good story and I enjoyed all the references to the 80‘s that reminded me of my childhood.

One of these things is not like the other! Didn't notice the 'based on the character' on the Guinea Pig one until I already had it home from the library. 🤦🏼‍♂️
No Roses for Harry seems a little more pointless than the last two I read about Harry: style preference rather than perception check. Didn't like that the story didn't confront people laughing at someone for the clothing they wore or why male didn't like floral/feminine cloth? 🙄 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 There's definitely some 1958 publication date gender stuff. I'm hoping there's a more relevant children's book version out there that would emphasize a being's right to choose what to wear, whether or not they liked roses, no matter how they identify. 🌹Harry and the Guinea Pig feels too much like an amalgam of children's stories I've read before, the fuss over who gets attention mashed up with a contrived mystery/adventure. Lost the charm of the originals. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 1y

Good mystery/thriller, but tough subject (kidnapped kids, pedophilia).

I donated some books at the station book swap a while back and I came home with some too. Always the way. I was obsessed with SARK in my late teens and used to own this tagged book.

MemoirsForMe Love SARK too! 🙌🏻 1y

I enjoyed this story, how Mr. Baldwin goes through the process of adaptation after his job retirement, affecting everyone in the house: his wife who had a routine for 30 years and even the maid. How funny that scene with the broom. But also is about to take risks at that age. Sometimes he was annoying with all those insecurities during his decision but understandable. Slow pace, more character driven, love the writing style, loved that couple 4⭐️

Should have bailed on this one. Stilted, torn from the headlines based on real story of missing paperboys and child abuse in the 80s. #Bookspin #Scarathalon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick

I really enjoyed this one with the #PersephoneClub recently. A story about Tom‘s and Edie‘s retirement .. beautiful writing, an insightful look at life. I‘m anxious to read more by this author.

A man retires, a life changing affair. What to do with his time? Gardening? Writing a book? It takes getting used to, for him and his wife.

Another wonderful book by Sheriff, whose A Fortnight in September I loved too, about daily life of two decent people in the early 20th century. A real gem!

CarolynM Such a great read. I don‘t know how he did it, but he made so much of so very little. I‘m looking forward to reading Fortnight in September (my copy arrived last week🙂) 2y
BarbaraBB @CarolynM You‘ll love it! He does exactly that again: making so much of so little. 2y
