#BookMoods Day 29: #SetInAnotherCentury, this baby by Dr Jose Rizal was published in Ghent in 1891. Read it when I was in highschool, and looking forward to rereading it as part of #DecolonizeBookshelves2022
pickA novel that charts some historical events in the #Philippines - from the Spanish occupation to the American one. Theme is strongly about nationalism and imperialism. I had planned to read this last year for #readingasia2021 but #bookspin has helped me tick it off my TBR. 🎉🎉
Book that #BeginsWith #State Day 14: photo taken with highly renowned Filipina-American novelist and feminist, Ninotchka Rosca. Very privileged to have been given a copy of this acclaimed book by the author herself - photo taken in Grand Central Terminal, New York a few years back.
panTold as part author's memoir, interviews, first-hand accounts, Salvador's unfinished bio, and articles, it DOES give some sense of place to the Philippines, but the author Syjuco sounds like he comes from money & prestige, so the sense of place is as it relates to the the influential, "do you know who my father is?" crowd. The story was a miss for me as it's less about the life and death of Crispin Salvador, and more about Miguel Syjuco, ⬇️

I‘ll probably put this book aside for now- just don‘t have the brain power. The writing is beautiful though.

pickThis was a well-written family saga and I did enjoy it. I just felt it was curiously dispassionate on the Japanese occupation of the #philippines and could, therefore, have been set anywhere. I think it was because the story was told by different narrators, telling their history to the MC, which made it feel rather distant.
A good read, nevertheless. Thanks for sending it to me Cindy! Would anyone else like this? #swapme
