I check the charity book table at my local shop more in hope than expectation of finding anything I'd be interested in amongst the old cook books, mountains of Jeremy Clarkson drivel and biographies of disgraced celebrities, but today I was rewarded for my perseverance with these two schlocky '70s tomes! 🖤🧌💚💀❤️🧛🏻‍♀️💚🧟‍♀️🖤 😱😁

LeahBergen Cool! 3d
The_Book_Ninja Still got my Gifford 🙂 2d
Bookwomble @LeahBergen Cool, but not as cool as @The_Book_Ninja who has his copy from back in the day! 😎 5h

A visually stunning coffee-table book that chronicles the glamour, history, and cultural significance of Hollywood‘s most exclusive post-Oscar celebrations. The book does more than showcase pretty pictures; it also traces how Oscar parties evolved from intimate studio gatherings in the 1940s to the high-profile, branded spectacles of today. Readers interested in Hollywood history will appreciate the timeline of shifting trends in fame and media.

Fantastic book. Flows well and kept me engaged the whole way. It was primarily about the whole process of the film, A Star is Born, but it also provided history on the two previous versions as well as the Streisand Version. It also ended up being a biography of Judy Garland and recollections from her daughter, Lorna, the author with Vance. I‘ve always loved the film and Judy Garland‘s voice, so it was a great book for me to read.

This week we celebrate the best in the books we read in the past year. It's time for the Book Oscars!! We debate fun categories such as best villain and best scene before announcing the winners for best book, best character, and best author. We love doing this episode!

Also, if you like upcoming book news we have a bit of that in the beginning. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

I can't possibly pick favorites from this list. So random thoughts, instead:

🩵 Up is my favorite movie ever. It warms my icy heart. I cry 3 times during it to this day.
🩵 Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. I'm so sad he died so young.
🩵 When Pulp Fiction came out, our local art theatre showed it during their Oscar series, and a bunch of elderly ladies who were regulars walked out in disgust. 🤣🫠

dabbe Fab score, too! 🤩🤩🤩 2mo
lil1inblue @dabbe Yeah, the opening scene is definitely an ugly cry for me, too. 😭 And the score is because the era covers my high school years, when I had a crush on a boy who wanted to become Stanley Kubrick. 😂 He broke my teenaged heart, but he also introduced me to so many good films! 😉 2mo

#ThreeListThursday #tlt

I got so excited reading everyone else's posts that I forgot to post mine! I chose my three favorites. In fact, they're in my top 10 of all time!
In no particular order:
1. CASABLANCA: “Louis, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.“
2. GONE WITH THE WIND: “After all, tomorrow is another day.“
3. REBECCA: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.“

Thanks to all who played! 🍿❣️📽️

shortsarahrose I got to see Gone with the Wind at a historic theater just like it would‘ve been seen originally and it was one of the coolest experiences. 3mo

Oscar Wars, by Michael Schulman (2023)

Premise: A history of the Academy Awards told through the stories of several pivotal moments across the decades.

Review: This is a fascinating and generally successful piece of nonfiction. My only struggle with it is the decision to tell the story of the Oscars through long, in-depth vignettes, rather than through a traditional survey. (Cont.)

Mattsbookaday The format has the advantage of really zooming in to specific moments in time, but its disadvantage is that it left me still feeling pretty murky about those parts of the history that were not the focus of any of the chapters. But if you‘re at all interested in cinema or pop culture in general, this is an excellent read.

Absolutely kicking myself for waiting this long to listen to the details, story, love, and attention to detail that I was hoping to hear about one of my favorite movies!

This audiobook was fantastic! Full of interviews from cast and crew, and boy do I mean crew, from producers, set designers, riggers, makeup, what a range of people all having to do in and around Mad Max: Fury Road.

A look at some of the more interesting stories, characters and controversies that have surrounded the Academy Awards over the course of its history including the Fontaine/deHavilland rivalry, Citizen Kane debacle, House of Unamerican Activities, #Oscarssowhite and Harvey Weinstein. Recommend to those with an interest.
