Sicilian Romance | Ann Radcliffe
post image
Pickpick

(1790) Ear-read during a long drive, this is Radcliffe's second novel and packed full of Gothic tropes: an exotic location (Sicily! Land of hot-blooded lovers!); a large sprawling mansion with decaying disused maybe-haunted rooms where mysterious lights appear; secret passages, family scandals, star-crossed love, and lots of fainting and almost-fainting and bursting into tears. It's a lot of muchness, but it was a welcome traveling companion

Ruthiella I‘ve only read The Mysteries of Udolpho, but the heroine in that one cries and faints in every chapter, it felt like. 😂😭 1mo
swynn @Ruthiella I haven't read Udolpho yet, but ... yeah ... 1mo

A fantastical retelling of Macbeth from the perspective Lady Macbeth.

Atmospheric ✨ Brooding ✨ Witchy

I went back and forth on liking this book, but ultimately felt that in trying to paint Lady Macbeth as a troubled, frightened, and suppressed wife, the story actually does the opposite of what it sets out to do - it takes away her agency and her voice. I think she‘s a more compelling character as a plotting, guilt ridden, and ambitious wife.

This book is so violently pink it hurts. But I had a good time! Although if I ever have to read about another woman calling herself an ermine again I might also go insane, I enjoyed a retelling of Macbeth from Lady Macbeth‘s perspective. Having only read The Wolf and the Woodsman from Reid before, I‘m glad the pacing issues I had from that one didn‘t appear here.

The Scottish Play is my favourite Shakespeare play, so I am intrigued by a retelling about Lady Macbeth. Ava Reid has done her research & has based the story & language in 11th Century Scotland. Is Lady Macbeth the villain men have painted her to be?

A “masterful reimagining” (Publishers Weekly) of Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare‘s most famous villainess, giving her a voice, a past, and a power that transforms the story men have written for her. 🐉 Order a copy today!

Thanks #netgalley for this thoroughly entertaining historical fantasy loosely based on Macbeth. I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the changes to the original.
