The Last Word: A Novel | Taylor Adams
After posting a negative book review, a woman living in a remote location begins to wonder if the author is a little touchy--or very, very dangerous--in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of No Exit and Hairpin Bridge. Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house's owner, Jules. One day, she reads a poorly written--but gruesome--horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night. To Emma, this can't just be a coincidence. It was strange enough for this author to bicker with her online about a lousy review; could he be stalking her, too? As Emma digs into Kane's life and work, she learns he has published sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. But who is he? How did he find her? And what else is he capable of?

I stayed up until 3 finishing this one. Told my husband I had to, because I was worried about the dog in it. I'm not sure what tomorrow morning's excuse for reading late will be yet. 😁
(SO many twists and turns! They weren't all unpredictable, but I still couldn't put it down!)

1. Go to work again - and only it it's just for a few days (been on sick leave for months again😓) and go to the cinema tomorrow with my boo (They're showing Donnie Darko again tomorrow for this one night).😊
2. Tagged.
3. Though... Hmmm. Think I'll go with gothic. Gothic lit is mostly well written and offers plenty of atmosphere, suspense and thrills without being too crass.

I really liked this for the most part. It started out really strong and kept momentum but then kinda got lost about halfway through. I thought it could have been a little bit shorter than what it was. The author got caught up with the story within the story and in parts it made the story drag. But, the suspense level was good and the twists were entertaining.

Wowza!! I just loved this #BOTMBacklog thriller! When Emma posts a one-star review, she never suspects that her past 3 months of isolation on the WA coast will come to a violent end. I feel like I read this in one breathless sitting! Part cautionary tale, part dark comedy, I laughed, gasped & was rewarded with the satisfaction of having been right all along! There are some other surprises, though & I really loved it— though dare you say otherwise?

CHALLENGE: NIGHTMARE

THRILLER - HORROR

A book's nightmare coming true all because of a negative review?
The book is very cleverly written as the real drama unfolds and we read the story the author is playing out - Emma knows what will happen because she is living it.

It is pretty gruesome, but those who know the work of Mr. Adams don‘t need to be forewarned. 4/5

Such a wild ride. My only complaint was in the print book there are some sections of different font, but that didn‘t always come through in audio, so there were some issues at first knowing what was present/book.

That was just silly. But the kind of ridiculousness where I'm not even mad at it. If you like the cheesy slasher meets self-critique meets final girl vibes of the Scream films, I think you'll like this too. Do not go looking for a well-plotted, keeps-you-guessing, taut thriller - as we know, I hate those, and I actually ended up not hating this!

I need to stop reading these thrillers. I just thought they were so many implausible twists in this, a so-so because I kept going until the end.
Do Americans really not have kettles? Is this real?

CSeydel Some of us do, but I would say it‘s not that common. 8mo
TrishB @CSeydel 😱 how do you make tea ☕️ please don‘t say in the microwave because I always thought that was a joke! 8mo
CSeydel I think most Americans don‘t drink tea every day. I drink coffee, and the machine boils the water. When I make tea, though, I do heat the water in the microwave. 8mo
See All 47 Comments
CSeydel (I think it‘s a myth that water heated in the microwave tastes different than water heated over a burner, although I know this is a subject of lively debate!) 8mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I could not finish this one. I won‘t say too much lol 😂 I loved No Exit, but this one was too over the top!! 8mo
TrishB @CSeydel it‘s the tea bag put in afterwards that probably makes it taste different! Also the water would be boiled in the kettle in the U.K. not on the burner. 8mo
TrishB @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I refrained from giving it one star! 😁 8mo
CSeydel Oh! The kettle I have sits on the stovetop, like a saucepan. 8mo
DivineDiana I use a kettle when I make tea! 🙋‍♀️ 8mo
TrishB @CSeydel it‘s electric kettles here 😁 here it‘s very 1970s to put a kettle on the burner. Funny isn‘t it 😁 8mo
TrishB @DivineDiana I‘m popping into yours for tea then 😁 8mo
CSeydel Oh, of course! That makes sense - just like I use an electric coffeemaker, since it‘s coffee I made daily. We often use our kettle to boil water when we‘re camping, so electric wouldn‘t be much good. 8mo
CarolynM I don‘t think they have toasters either. I don‘t know how they survive🤣 8mo
IndoorDame Most Americans have stovetop tea kettles not electric water boilers. They take way longer, but I‘ve almost never been in a house here without one. 8mo
Bookzombie @CarolynM Who doesn‘t have toasters? 🙂 I‘m in the US and have an upright toaster. When I was growing up we always had a toaster oven. I don‘t have an electric kettle though, but I‘m not a hot tea drinker. 😬 8mo
BarbaraBB Great discussion 😀 and I totally feel you about having to stop reading this kind of thriller! 8mo
CarolynM @Bookzombie I‘m glad to be wrong about that🙂 8mo
intothehallofbooks I have a toaster, I use it often! I don‘t have a kettle because I don‘t really drink hot tea. It‘s fine, but I drink coffee daily which I make in my electric coffeemaker. When I choose to drink tea, it‘s sweet tea with ice and lemon! I cannot think of a time I‘ve seen anyone use a kettle in real life. I‘m in NC. 😊 8mo
Cinfhen Ha!! This conversation is hilarious 😆 so….I never used a kettle in the US or in Israel…I have a hot water urn which i use for making tea or hot cocoa and my toaster oven @CarolynM is strictly for toasting or warming but never for actual cooking/baking!! (edited) 8mo
Cinfhen As for this book…. I HATED No Exit, I thought it was sooooo over the top…I can‘t believe he actually out did himself😜Even at 99p it‘s just not worth it 😂 8mo
CarolynM @Cinfhen A toaster is for making toast, you can‘t cook in it! Are we talking about the same piece of equipment @Bookzombie @intothehallofbooks ? 8mo
TrishB @CarolynM I‘m going to have to plan ahead when I go to the US- no tea or toast 😱 8mo
TrishB @Bookzombie @Cinfhen I‘m totally confused as to what a toaster oven is! 8mo
TrishB @intothehallofbooks 😁 a Brit would never think you meant cold tea if you are talking about tea! 8mo
TrishB @IndoorDame that‘s where it came up in the book- she was trying to boil water and it was taking so long on the stove that I was thinking just put the (electric) kettle on! (edited) 8mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB why they have to write so many stupid twists! I think I‘m done now! 8mo
TrishB @Cinfhen I‘m glad it was only 99p! 8mo
CarolynM My daughter loved the summer she spent on Cape Cod, but by the time she reached the UK she was desperate for tea and toast🤣 8mo
IndoorDame @Cinfhen my sister in Israel calls her hot water urn the kumkum and I can‘t figure out what that word means!? Is it one of those things about the sound it makes? 8mo
AlaMich I‘ve had an electric kettle since I visited Australia thirty years ago and first encountered one. Ironically, I use it to boil water to make coffee in a French press (and occasionally tea). (edited) 8mo
batsy I first became aware of this on twitter and it kind of blew my mind. There was major kettle discourse 😂 8mo
BarbaraBB What is a toaster oven? I have no idea either @CarolynM @TrishB … in Holland we toast bread in a toaster and we make tea jn an (electric) toaster. We hardly ever use a magnetron at all. Most people have one but have stopped using it after the baby bottles were done with 😀 8mo
TrishB @batsy I love that, major kettle discourse 😁 8mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB I‘m learning so much! 8mo
Caroline2 I just finished this one too. I really liked it in the beginning, reminded me a bit of Misery. But yeah, then it went too far and twisted it self into a pretzel till I was just rolling my eyes and sighing. 🤦‍♀️ 8mo
TrishB @Caroline2 I love that description 😂 8mo
Cinfhen Hahaha!!! They do call an electric urn a kumkum @IndoorDame but I honestly have no clue why 🤷🏼‍♀️!!! It usually heats up 16oz of water in about two minutes- so enough for 2 cups…I don‘t use that. I have a big urn for hot water which boils about 5 liters of water and then there is a setting to keep it hot. I keep it on all winter but I really don‘t use it during the warmer months because I prefer very cold water!! For coffee I use a Keurig (edited) 8mo
IndoorDame @Cinfhen I‘ve seen those larger ones. My mom runs one through Shabbat every week. So clever to just keep it on all winter! Never even occurred to me to do something like that even though when I lived somewhere with a wood burning stove for heat we just kept an old fashioned cast iron kettle on top and I loved having ready hot water all winter. 8mo
Cinfhen So your mom uses a Shabbat pot @IndoorDame my mom too! It‘s actually the perfect insta hot😉 8mo
IndoorDame @Cinfhen hahaha of course it‘s called that! That‘s perfect 😆 8mo
CarolynM @AlaMich Every hotel room in Australia (and most I‘ve been in in the UK and Europe) has one and a selection of tea bags, instant coffee and often a biscuit (cookie) or two. I‘d have been shocked not to find one in my US hotel rooms if I hadn‘t been warned🙂 8mo
AlaMich @CarolynM They are so much better than stovetop kettles! If you don‘t take those off the stove, they will burn themselves dry. 8mo
Centique @CarolynM yes! When i first went on a business trip to the US, (chicago in 2000) i was like “where the heck is the kettle?” There was a filter coffee machine i had no idea how to use. So i asked room service for a cup of tea and got a mug of hot water and some kind of lemon teabag. So funny and naive that i had assumed the whole western world has english breakfast tea. 😂😂 8mo
TrishB @Centique until yesterday I still maintained that naivety, but now I know there‘s no guarantee of a kettle never mind a tea bag!! @CarolynM I‘m well warned now. 8mo
LeahBergen I‘m loving this discussion and must chime in. 😆😆 Here in Canada, I grew up with electric kettles (at home and at my Nan‘s) but always wanted an old-fashioned, stove-top whistling kettle. Well, I have that now (a nice Le Creuset one) but also have an electric kettle which has a temperature control for different types of tea (black vs green, etc). And we have ALWAYS had a toaster. I even have one in my camper trailer. 😆 @CarolynM 7mo
TrishB @LeahBergen love it 😁 I‘m assured of my tea and toast in your house then! 7mo
LeahBergen @TrishB You certainly are! 😄 7mo

This is not the type of book I ever read. A grieving woman is house sitting on a remote beach with only a reclusive neighbor for a friend. She becomes aware that she‘s being stalked and the book turns into a cat-and-mouse story of who can outsmart who. And who exactly is that neighbor? Have to admit I couldn‘t put it down and it felt very satisfying as the truth unfolded. Who will get the last word?

WTF did I just read?! So many thought racing through my head right now. I had a like/dislike relationship with this book for many reasons. The plot had a lot of promise, but parts dragged on a bit for me & while I cheered for the main character, I have no idea why because I didn‘t love her. Overall it was an okay book, but not a book I would reread.

The Last Word was so, so good. I enjoyed it from the very beginning. Buttt given the nature of the story, I wouldn‘t say anything else because this guy wrote a whole thriller centered around someone giving an author a bad review. I‘m just kidding though I absolutely loved this one.

The atmosphere was oppressive and creepy. And there were twists and turns around every corner that kept me hooked until the end.

This book took me way too long to finish, but I think that was more a “me” issue than an issue with the story. From the very beginning the story draws you in and, once the insanity and thrills begin, I felt like I figuratively got whiplash from all the twists and turns. I‘ll say that some of the things characters survived were pretty far fetched but that just reminded me of horror movies (which I love). I also really liked the ending! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This review will be ironic as the premise of this book is that a woman writes a poor online review of a book and then gets stalked by the unhappy author.

This was entertaining and thrilling and perfect for my plane ride home! It‘s an isolation thriller and a bit over the top and sometimes absurd, but it‘s wild in a good way. The narration was interesting and took an unreliable narrator to a new place. I knew there were some twists thrown in and figured out the major one pretty quickly (like before I even started the book quickly) but it didn‘t affect my enjoyment. 4/5⭐️

Strayed and finished this book last night. It was a mail biter but I definitely think I mostly blew through it because I was scared for the dog. 2.5⭐️ #botm

The book *quoted*: Coincidences in books is just bad writing".
The book: Has too many coincidences to count and gives everyone a million lives even after obvious fatal wounds.
This book was very down the middle for me. It was a fun ride but I just couldn't look over the obvious plot holes and coincidences in this book. I wanted to love it, but.
It was just okay. 3/5

A woman writes a one star review of the worst horror novel she‘s ever read, and is stalked by the author who is a serial killer. Well, this is a one star review of THIS novel, and if Taylor Adams comes after me seeking retribution, so be it. I read past the halfway mark to find out what happens to the dog, but finally couldn‘t it take it anymore. Every stalker trope is here, and maybe that‘s the point, but life‘s too short!

This is very fun, bonkers, horror/thriller. A woman who is grieving is house sitting alone with only a shut in older gentleman neighbor for company. She spends most of her day reading indi thrillers, when she reads a truly bad book and gives it one star, the author takes offense…
This was a fast paced thrilling read, even though I guessed the twist, it was still a lot of fun. 4⭐️
