This book is a twisty thriller. It starts out quite tamely, but, oh, that ending. The Florida heat is a major character in this murdery tale. Beware those with a rigid moral code. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

A look through a narrow, gritty window at a white 1950s city neighborhood decayed by addiction. Each chapter dips into the mind of a different character, all struggling basically with the choice to focus on self or community. This is woven through a propulsive story that simmers with the threat of violence & finally explodes in nightmarish murder.

Bookwomble The title being a mashup of Burnett's "The Asphalt Jungle" and Algren's "The Neon Wilderness", I had to triple-check what I was reading before I recognised it was neither ? 3y
Bookwomble Love the cover 😍 3y
Michael_Gee @Bookwomble How funny! I haven‘t read either of those, but this was published after them so I bet he/the publishers were banking on that confusion/association. 3y
Bookwomble @Michael_Gee No doubt. The cover is suggestive of both the others. Burnett's is a nice heist caper, which was made into a film giving Marilyn Munroe her biggest part up to that time. Algren's is his usual dour self, telling stories of urban alienation, which I've always assumed gave The Verve the title for their song on the Urban Hymns album. Connections! ⛓🙂 3y

Condominium: A Novel | John D. MacDonald

I live in the PNW, and today I was video chatting with my parents in Florida when they noticed my mug. They brought up the tagged book and how prophetic it became considering the recent turned-up history about the architect who designed the ill fated Surfside. Which then made us wonder if Starbucks will change its design. It didn't occur to me that condos represented Florida.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m lost on the connection between Surfside and Starbucks… 3y
mandarchy @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I would have been lost too. My parents saw the condos on the mug in the video chat. I never noticed them. That got them talking about the book. 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oooh, it‘s a Starbucks mug. Gotcha! 😅 I was trying to figure out how your parents went from talking about condos to logo design. 🤦‍♀️ I‘m with it now! 🤣😂 3y

I know. It' so hard to make sense with so few characters and then I am a reader not a writer - I am famous amongst my friends for telling non sequitur stories. I was just stunned when my dad pointed it out. I have had the mug for several years and never thought of condos as being emblematic of Florida, but in a way they are.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm No worries, I definitely find Litsy‘s character count limit to be constricting as well. I love your gnome-munching porch statue in the background btw! 😂🤣😂 3y
mandarchy Thanks! The gnome is for my Godzilla obsessed son. I got tired of people sending me memes of it on Facebook. So when I saw it at the store I bought it. There are so many Godzillas in my house! 3y
KrisNelson I know you…please take over my library…I‘ll pay for gas and new books! 3y

Mehso-so

I managed to squeeze in my April #bookspin, so yay for that! This is definitely not a book I would have attempted to read if not for the fact that it was apparently referenced in Peter Swanson's "Eight Perfect Murders". For me, it didn't really pick up until the last third...but it was fine. My Kindle version had SO many typos though!!

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! I hate it when the Kindle versions are done so poorly. It's like no one even proofreads them at all! 4y

Interesting! Not my favorite, but I‘m withholding judgment until I see what it brings to the plot of Eight Perfect Murders (which is why I read this in the first place).
