Faces and Masks | Eduardo Galeano

#WickedWhispers Day 31: #Mask - I should begin Memory of Fire by Uruguayan literary author Eduardo Galeano. I fell in love with his The Book of Embraces and bought all his other books I can find. I should get to them soonest. 🙏🏼

I read the whole thing b/c there was important & interesting information, but this author did not really have the range to write this book lol. She has a college freshman‘s analysis of concepts like race, class & nationalism, and she chooses to write from the perspective of empires and states instead of a “people‘s history”… plus the chapter naming convention barely makes sense 😒 Ambitious but ultimately pretty superficial.

I bought the first 2 books just so I could read this trilogy!

A dystopian supernatural thriller involving a Mayan Jaguar cult? A looming apocalypse! YESS! What more do you need to know! You‘ve got ancient Mayan history, magic, shape shifting, all in a fast paced action thriller! I loved the deadly game with the families! The three connected women. Great audiobooks between chonkers!

I‘m far behind in my reviews so this is already out!

We pick up where book one left off. A supernatural dystopian thriller with magic & a shape shifting jaguar priest.

Our Mayan cult leader is bent on world domination via an apocalyptic event & one family man is out to stop him.

Book two of The Dresden Codex

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

In the mid 1980s, Salman Rushdie went to #Nicaragua and talked to people about the Sandinista/Contra conflict. He chronicles the trip here. It‘s always fascinating to see the different between how real people on the ground experience something and what is reported in the news. Plus, this book has been in circulation at my library for over 35 years. So cool!

vivastory I love Rushdie but for some reason had never heard of this one! 11mo
Hooked_on_books @vivastory The only reason I found it was because of this reading challenge. Which I think is the whole point! 😉 11mo

Very interesting depictions of South America just before the millennium. Also good if you like motorcycles.

A critical overview of Latin America‘s history, and the foreign interference that has negatively impacted its development.

Like The Tibetan Book of Living & Dying, this book is meant to spark discussion and for the reader to derive their own meaning.

I was surprised to find a cookbook for #FoodandLit #Chile in the library. So many tasty looking recipes, but I settled on just making ensalada de repollo con zanahoria, crema de garbanzos, tortilla de lechuga, and the irresistible chupe de mariscos.

Texreader Wow! Fantastico!!! 13mo

I found this nonfiction read for #ReadingTheAmericas to be well written and for me brought #Nicaragua to life for me. This is the first time reading this author and I found his account of his time in this country eye opening and intriguing. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks @librarybelle @BarbaraBB
