This is a really interesting historical fiction read incorporating true facts (the Zone Rouge is real & so was the Nazi fascination with the Occult). I think that the author did a great job of conveying the tense & suspicious atmosphere of an occupied country, where the inhabitants cannot be sure who is on their side & who is a traitor. In fact all the narrative concentrated on the war is done very well, but I found that (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf the supernatural side of things was a bit of a letdown after the build-up. I thought things could have been ratcheted up there a little more. It's a minor quibble though & I did enjoy reading this one. 4🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is an interesting & informative read on the subject of where the prevailing image of the archetypical witch came from. The author argues that the modern portrayal of witches owes more to the Greek & Roman eras than it does to the Medieval.

There is also a discussion of the lasting change in their representation from the Greek idea of witches as attractive & seductive (for example Hecate & Circe) to the Roman portrayals as (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf ugly, old hags (for example Erictho & Canidia) & the author links this to the patriarchal & misogynistic set-up of the Roman world & their fear of women with power.

There is also a brief discussion of witches in modern media such as the musicals 'The Wizard of Oz' & 'Wicked', & TV show 'Charmed' to name a few, but in the main the Roman hangover seems to prevail.

OutsmartYourShelf It was well-researched & mentioned quite a lot of information that I wasn't aware of before. 4🌟

Bramwell Finch has just lost his old business partner & friend, & now looks set to miss out on his last hope for a coveted film award. Everything he sacrificed for success has come to nothing & now he has nothing & no-one. On Christmas Eve, Finch receives an invitation to a private screening at his studio, at a screening room he knows does not exist. Yet there it is - Room 6, & Finch sits down to watch his misdeeds played out onscreen.

OutsmartYourShelf When I first started this, it initially felt as if I had missed the beginning (similar to if you start watching a film partway through & it takes you a minute to catch up), but once I'd worked out what was going on, this turned out to be a pretty decent read. It seems to be a retelling of 'A Christmas Carol' with the dastardly main character being shown the error of his ways but set in the world of 1930s film-making. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf It was fairly short & kept my interest. 3.25⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publisher, Grave Image Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

For the past eight years, Brynn Donovan's father has been in prison convicted of killing her mother. Brynn & brother Max initially lived with their aunt but recently Brynn has been living her own life as a tattoo artist. On the way home from work one evening, Brynn's estranged father kidnaps her & says that what he said back then was true: there is something under the earth that is coming to get them & once he has secured Max too (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf they are heading for a shelter he has built to keep them both safe. Brynn looks for an opportunity to escape but events start to make her wonder if the threat may be real after all.

Liked: the storyline was good & completely different to what I initially expected. This is one of those books that it is best to go into knowing as little as possible apart from the setup. Dislikes: the main character Brynn - being a smartass a-hole is not the same as

OutsmartYourShelf being a strong character. The pacing was also way too full-on all the time with barely time to catch your breath. Overall, whilst it was a good story, the main character affected my enjoyment of it. I rate this one 3.5🌟

Halley is looking for a place to lay low from a political scandal that has put a target on her back. A job on the 'Elysian Fields', a spaceship where hundreds of bodies lies cryogenically frozen awaiting reanimation should the technology become available, seems like a godsend. Apart from the caretaker, Karl, there's not a soul aboard - well not one who is awake anyway.......

OutsmartYourShelf This is a very atmospheric (in both senses) read, I could really picture myself as Halley aboard the slowly deteriorating ship. The setting of a floating cryogenic store in space is a really creepy one & it works so well here. The storyline didn't go in quite the way I had imagined before reading it, but it was an interesting take. If you like sci-fi horror, then this author's books are well worth reading. 4🌟 1mo
