Following the death of her grandmother, Freya spent this Christmas alone for the first time in years. Freya & her brother were raised by their grandparents after their parents died in an accident & Freya in particular was very close to her grandmother - living in the same house & running a bakery company 'Past Time Treats' together. Now both grandparents are dead & her brother has his own family, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf so when a last-minute job is offered to cater for a Twelfth Night ball at nearby Hill House, Freya decides to take it.

There she meets charming estate manager, Callum, & Jasper the loveable terrier, & when she is snowed in whilst preparing the Regency-themed cakes, she experiences vivid dreams which seem to be from another time. It seems Hill House is a very special place & it just may show Freya the way forward.

OutsmartYourShelf Now I'm not generally a big reader of romance, but I loved this! Both Freya & Callum were adorable characters (along with Jasper the dog) & I think the timeslip & Christmasy aspects really gave it something extra. It would make a great Christmas season film! Although it works perfectly well as a standalone read, I will definitely be going back & reading the whole series at some point. 5🌟 2w

Kathryn has recently split from her husband, & on a night out with a friend, meets Todd who is an IT expert including carrying out work for the local police department. Their relationship never really gets off the ground, but when Kathryn wants to call it off, the charming, helpful, affable Todd shows the other side to his personality, & due to his IT expertise he has access to her phone, her security cameras, & even her car. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Everywhere she goes, Todd soon turns up, & when she has finally had enough & files for a restraining order, things become really dark & Kathryn learns that she is not the first woman he has done this to.

I found this a compelling read but one that made me extremely anxious whilst reading it - it was almost like an intense episode of 'Criminal Minds'. I know this is based on a true story, & it is frightening to think that there seems to be very
2w
OutsmartYourShelf little protection for victims of stalking. What there is, is woefully inadequate, & basically ties the victim up in judicial knots & favours the perp. It was in equal parts infuriating & exasperating how Todd was able to use the law to harass his victims. I can only commend anyone who is resilient & strong enough to take cases like this to court & fight on in the face of such obstacles, it must be harrowing. 4🌟 2w
OutsmartYourShelf My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, After Dark Ink Publishing Co (IBPA), for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This was an OK read. It doesn't really have the sense of menace that some of the earlier books had, & you have to suspend your disbelief for something stuff, such as that a hospital would let a member of staff just give their kid a copy of a patient sign-in sheet. I suppose it was the 90s but even so! (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf In the midst of the high-speed ending, one character says to another “What are we going to do? Just drive around until we run into a plastic surgeon who can change our looks for free?“ - I actually burst out laughing because it was so ridiculous.

Short Review:

This was quite a good cosy mystery with a well-worked out plot. I found it difficult to warm to Midge as a main character at first, but then I pictured her as being played by a middle-aged Miriam Margolyes & that helped. I do think that she was a little bit too timid though, & her characterisation focused too much on her weight at times. I'd definitely read another 'Midge Mystery' though. 4🌟

The Long Walk | Richard Bachman
post image
Pickpick

Sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty is about to start the Long Walk - an annual competition between 100 boys where the one to walk the longest distance wins his wildest dreams. The boys have to maintain a pace of 4 miles per hour, day & night, no stopping for toilet breaks, eating, or sleeping, & soldiers monitor them continuously. 3 warnings & you are out - permanently.

OutsmartYourShelf Attention everyone, I think hell has officially frozen over! I've just read a Stephen King book that I finished AND I actually liked it. It started off rather subtle for a King book (albeit writing as Richard Bachman), the idea of a walk being a horror subject is strange at first. The key is the required pace of 4 miles an hour - it sounds manageable but imagine keeping that up nonstop for days. 3w
OutsmartYourShelf Anyone falling behind or stopping gets 3 warnings before they 'receive their ticket' - the full horror of that innocuous phrase becomes clear fairly early on.

It's fairly fast-paced (ironically enough) even though most of the 'action' is the boys talking to each other & their dilemma between friendships & rivalry. If I could change one thing it would be to remove the creepy bits about women & girls' bodies - just not needed.
3w
OutsmartYourShelf Overall though, this is one of King's best books for me. 4🌟

CSeydel That‘s a common complaint in any King novel. I try not to let it ruin the story, but sometimes he can be very cringe-inducing 3w
OutsmartYourShelf @CSeydel He's not a writer I particularly like reading but I'm going to try The Running Man as well (hopefully this month). 3w

Bramwell Finch has just lost his old business partner & friend, & now looks set to miss out on his last hope for a coveted film award. Everything he sacrificed for success has come to nothing & now he has nothing & no-one. On Christmas Eve, Finch receives an invitation to a private screening at his studio, at a screening room he knows does not exist. Yet there it is - Room 6, & Finch sits down to watch his misdeeds played out onscreen.

OutsmartYourShelf When I first started this, it initially felt as if I had missed the beginning (similar to if you start watching a film partway through & it takes you a minute to catch up), but once I'd worked out what was going on, this turned out to be a pretty decent read. It seems to be a retelling of 'A Christmas Carol' with the dastardly main character being shown the error of his ways but set in the world of 1930s film-making. 3w
OutsmartYourShelf It was fairly short & kept my interest. 3.25⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publisher, Grave Image Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Crater Lake | Jennifer Killick

Year 6 are on a coach bound for an activity trip to Crater Lake & are almost there when a strange, bloodstained man tries to stop the coach before collapsing. The teachers take the students the rest of the way on foot whilst the coach driver rings for an ambulance, but when they reach Crater Lake something is wrong at the activity centre.

OutsmartYourShelf There only seems to one member of staff who is acting distinctly oddly, & overnight the teachers & some of the other students seem to have been affected too. It's up to Lance & his friends to find out what's going on & save the day!

I'm not the target audience for this book but I thought it was pretty good. There's a decent plot & engaging characters, & I think the target age range (9-12 years) would really enjoy it. 4🌟

27 short stories & poetry which take the infamous Borden murders as their starting point. There's a mix of psychological horror, supernatural horror, & science fiction takes on what happened that day, including the theory of Jack the Ripper escaping to America, spirit possession, & time travel to name a few.

For me, the standout stories were:

14) 'Done to the Letter' by Allie Harrison (the aforementioned JtR link)

continued...

OutsmartYourShelf 16) 'You Can Go Home Again' by C.A. Verstraete (Lizzie Borden - Zombie Hunter)

17) 'Lizzie Borden is Vital to the Timeline' by Janet Gershon-Siegel (Reminded me of an episode of 'Timeless', would have liked this one to be longer)

25) 'The House Next Door' by Trish Wilson (a fictional ghost tour at the Borden house, now a ghost tour location/B&B)

Overall I rate this one 3.5🌟

A book detailing the life & disappearance of explorer Hubert Darrell in 1910. Although he was respected by people such as Roald Amundsen for his feats in crossing uncharted areas of the Northwest Territories alone & on foot, after his disappearance his name has largely faded into history. So what actually happened to Darrell?

OutsmartYourShelf Wow, I loved this! I'd never heard of Hubert Darrell before reading this but something about the synopsis drew me in & I'm so glad it did. I enjoyed every moment of reading it. It has everything: painstaking research, a great writing style that packs lots of information into text that never becomes dry to read, & even the author's own travels following in Darrell's footsteps. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Several years ago I read & enjoyed one of the author's earlier books (Beyond the Trees), & I would say that Vanished Beyond the Map surpasses it. I am absolutely certain that I will reread this one in years to come. 5🌟

Medlock | S.G. Hartnell

Mehso-so

1978 & Mrs. Medlock is housekeeper to Lord & Lady Ashton at Marwood Manor including caring for their sickly young son. When an orphaned distant relative, a young girl named Mary, comes to live at the Manor, Mrs Medlock knows she is going to be trouble from the off. Sullen, uncooperative & unruly, the only thing that interests Mary is a locked door in a long wall outside.....

OutsmartYourShelf Probably like a lot of people, I was drawn to this one by the seeming 'Secret Garden' references (Medlock, Mary, sickly son, etc). but it feels a bit like bait & switch. Rather than a retelling or even reimagining, the similarities are surface only. I can't understand the decision to set it in the 1970s, it doesn't fit the characters who seemed like they were from an earlier time, & I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't a period piece. 1mo
ShananigansReads A secret garden imagination? Interesting (at least the concept) 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Also the female characters were either vapid flibbertigibbets or matronly dragons - a bit of nuance was badly needed. Sadly I found this one to be a bit of a disappointment (except for the cover which is great). 2⭐
