The Modern Fairies | Clare Pollard
post image
Pickpick

An engaging read, reimaginging the literary salons of pre-revolutionary France. Pollard prefectly captures the tension and stresses of the time, as there is a spy amongst their midst. This results in arrests and the cessation of these gatherings where fairytales are told by Charles Perrault & Madame D'Aulnoy.

TEArificbooks Loved the prose. Loved learning about the ancient myths and legends about bears. Was shocked and disturbed about that the bear bile farms are still such a big thing. Worried about the future of bears and wish I was a gazillionaire so I could establish bear rescues and reserves. 2d
julieclair I did enjoy the writing style. I listened on audio, and although there were plenty of facts and research presented, the book still flowed easily. Like @TEArificbooks , I was shocked and sickened about the bile farms. So sad. One thing that surprised me, was how smart bears are. Makes the phrase “smarter than your average bear” seem pretty silly, since your average bear is actually very smart. 2d
julieclair I do agree with rewilding and conservation efforts, but I also sympathize with the farmers and ranchers who lose valuable crops/animals to the bears, not to mention the loss of human life due to bear encounters. It‘s hard to know where the right balance is. 2d
Bookwormjillk I enjoyed this book. I like when the author tied in literature like Paddington and how he came to be from Peru. This reminded me of another favorite read this year 2d
yourfavouritemixtape I liked this book a lot because the writing was very fluent and you learned a lot without the feeling of being taught. 2d
AllDebooks @TEArificbooks Yes, the bile farms were shocking and so difficult to read. I thought she did a great job highlighting the difficulties of stopping this illegal torture. 1d
AllDebooks @julieclair I listened to the audio too and loved it. I'll probably listen repeatedly. 1d
AllDebooks @julieclair As to rewilding, I agree it's a complex balancing act. We, as humans, need to completely rethink our mindset on it being our planet. We share it with billions of species who have as much right to be here as we do. We've caused catastrophic damage to their environments and food sources. We can't really complain when they start encroaching into our space in order to survive. 1d
AllDebooks @julieclair I think the answer lies in legislation, education, public engagement, and support for landowners to adapt their land use. Look at the success of the Knepp estate. These rewilding projects can be monetised, bringing in tourists. 1d
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk Yes, I found that really charming and engaging. Who doesn't love Paddington? 1d
AllDebooks @yourfavouritemixtape It is a beautifully written, informative book. 1d
AllDebooks I'm so glad you enjoyed this read as much as I did. It's one of my favourite reads of the year so far. It would have been perfect if there was more mention of European bears. 1d
AllDebooks For anyone didturbed by the bear bile farms. There are a number of charities working to stop it. Links for your information coming next x 1d
AllDebooks I was shocked to find the WWF last report on bear bile farms was from 2011!!! https://www.wwf.org.la/?200329/Illegal-bear-bile-trade-rampant-in-Asia 1d
julieclair @AllDebooks 💯 I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said! 1d
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Loved the writing style. I really enjoyed the little jabs she took at people that are part of the problem. Bears are my husbands favorite animal so I knew quite a bit about them and honestly have always had a positive opinion of them. Except for the panda…I‘m not a big fan. 😅 My family and I even got black bear tattoos on a family vacation to Gatlinburg one year. I wholeheartedly believe we should be doing our best to help these animals and ⬇️ 1d
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm although I feel for people more directly affected, I do think there‘s a middle ground we can meet in without killing more bears. My favorite bear has always been the grizzly. There‘s something so very wild and “old world” about them. This book may have moved polar bears up a bit though. I cried at the thought that my son could inherit a planet without polar bears. 1d
bookwyrm7 Unfortunately I got sick and still haven't finished it 😅 However, as a biologist who wanted to specialise in bears I know that my favourite is the Polar Bear and I absolutely hate Pandas 🤣 They may be cuddly but as a species they are absolutely ridiculous (I could write a dissertation on that), not to mention that they are now used by China to get what they want politically exactly because so many people love them and will pay to see them. 5h
bookwyrm7 On the other hand Polar bears are incredibly resilient, considering just how well adapted they are to a very specific habitat. They are amazing at living in one of the most inhospitable environment on Earth but they are also incredibly intelligent and resilient and try their best to adapt to changes (unlike Pandas who will ONLY eat literally one thing 🤦‍♀️). Unfortunately, things look very dim for them, which is why I left the conservation world. 5h
bookwyrm7 As for the rewilding of certain species, I don't usually agree with it unless the issues that led to their struggles have already been resolved. This was another reason why I left the conservation world: of you're just keeping a species around for you to feel better about yourself, while the animals keep suffering, struggling or facing some sort of incoming problems or possible extinction (due to climate change, etc), 1/2 5h
bookwyrm7 Then who are you helping? Why are you keeping these animals around? I think ppl don't realise how little conservation has to do w/ science or biology: if capitalism keeps exploiting everything in its path, there is no future for any of these species. Are you ready to change a whole world-wide system? To give up on comforts like Amazon, fast fashion or buying new smartphones every few years? I wish we could save them. But I don't think it's likely. 5h
bookwyrm7 With that said, I'm really enjoying the book. So far the author strikes a good balance between exposing the hardships these animals face (as well as some of the locals) while also giving the reader some hope and some happy stories (otherwise it would be a very depressing read...). 4h
bookwyrm7 I would just like to clarify that I do believe in saving these animals (and many others!). Rewilding can be done well and it's great. I definitely want to save all the bears (except maybe Pandas ?, just kidding...). I definitely get that we keep these species "alive" in the hope of better days. But I also think there should be a balance between keeping it going and knowing when to let go. I hate to see animals suffer. 4h

My mood board is full of the joys of nature. It's such a spectacular time of year with all the new life budding, amazing sunrises, and my absolute favourite sound, the dawn chorus. It's always the little wren that kicks it off. I have a few mistle thrush singing away throughout the day.

KadaGul @Suet624 In Chicago, we only experience Spring for a brief period of a few weeks. It's been over ten years since we had more than two weeks of Spring. The weather pattern usually involves two days of sunshine, followed by a week of windy and cold weather and snow. Finally, we emerge from the snow into the next season. 2mo
Catsandbooks @Chrissyreadit I do the same thing! I also have a bowl of water for critters. Last night a possum visited! 2mo

I don't know about you guys, but I am so happy to see some signs of Spring springing. The daffodils are budding, the apple blosson is finished, the birds are singing their little hearts out. 🎵

TheBookHippie Nothing yet. Although we aren‘t buried in snow like usual, no signs yet. I don‘t usually plant til after May 15. We have snow through April in “normal” years. I do long to garden. It so short that everything is “green” here. Still in the 20s F here at night. 40s F in daytime. Which is a heatwave for March! 2mo

A mammoth analysis of the Russian revolution that is well worth a read. Figes broaches the historical figures with a compassionate but critical eye, scrutinising key events that led to the overthrown Romanovs, revolution, and catastrophic change for so many. The repercussions of which are still felt a century later. It is endlessly fascinating.

My planned #ReadyourKindle list for March. I'll be choosing a mix from this and my fiction list (next post).
The tagged book is no.79 on my #Roll100 list, so that's a definite read this month.

Pickpick

I was absolutely swept along with this amazing book. The plot is intricate and skilfully crafted. The characters are fantastic, flawed, and oh so realistic. Oh and the plot twists are fantastic!
I loved it so much that I went straight onto the sequel, The Shadow Cabinet.
Both books get 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.
Trots off to track down more by Juno Dawson. My new-to-me author of the year? Quite possibly. 😍🤔😍

Cuilin For a book that could have been dry, I found it exciting, compelling and informative. I loved it! I will be reading more by this author. I loved the relationships, the petty arguments by letter, the voyages, even Cpt Blythe showed up. The casual racism, slavery, and Imperialism though of its time was still frustrating. Overall well written. 2mo
TheBookHippie I love it. Almost done reading. 2mo
jlhammar Enlightening read! Really enjoyed. In Part I, I thought it was so interesting (and kind of funny from a modern day perspective) that Fairchild felt the need to attribute his hybrid to accident. And the uproar over and resistance to the Linneaus classification system, “inadequate because the sexual organs of plants were 'mere geewgaws'“ was also fascinating (and amusing 😆). 2mo
jlhammar This bit from Part 2 made me chuckle “His worst insult he saved for the hated Siegesbeck, who, as punishment for having so relentlessly criticised Linnaeus's sexual system, will be forever remembered in Siegesbeckia, a stinking weed that thrives in wasteland.“ 2mo
jlhammar Lots of disturbing behavior in Part 3 such as Banks and Solander taking Tupia, a Tahitian priest, back to England to “keep him as a curiosity.“ I liked how Banks gave his wife a brooch of dried moss and she was less than enthusiastic 😆 “fool that she likes diamonds better.“ 2mo
Bookwormjillk I spend a lot of time removing invasive plants and re-planting with native species, so I had had to chuckle at the topic of this book. I enjoyed it although I got all of the people confused. 2mo
yourfavouritemixtape I liked it a lot. It was very interesting and very entertaining to read. I also thought Fairchild‘s problem with his hybrid was fascinating. As well as Linneaus‘ story. 2mo
AllDebooks It was a completely unexpected read. I, too, thought it might be a bit dry and stuffy @Cuilin But Wulf has done a fantastic job at tracing these mens lives from the UK, Europe and the States. I was fascinated by the petty squabbles and felt for Bartram. He really was taken advantage before the subscription boxes started. 2mo
AllDebooks Who knew Linnaeus was such as ass? 🤔 2mo
AllDebooks I was quite surprised that a number of species I thought were native to UK are in fact, from the Americas. 2mo
Cuilin @AllDebooks I wondered if the author regretted naming her daughter Linnea. 2mo
Cuilin @jlhammar 🤣🤣🤣 2mo
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks I had this same thought when watching a Catherine The Great documentary about her gardens. She grew food from the Americas to prevent famine but also flowers. One never thinks of things like that or I guess I didn‘t. 2mo
AllDebooks @CatLass007 Great, welcome 😊 2mo
