Solito: A Memoir | Javier Zamora

I want to make everyone read this book. The audiobook (read by the author) was fantastic. My brain can't comprehend how terrifying the migration had to be for a 9 year old boy surrounded by complete strangers. Javier's story is a powerful reminder of the risks undocumented immigrants take to enter the USA for the hope of a better life.

Singout This was recommended by a friend when I was doing Reading the Americas but I didn‘t get to it: I should push it back up on my list. 7d

Hello #SheSaid!

How is the book going? I‘m way behind and still packing, but hoping to be on the other side soon and able to unwind with this book. So I hope it‘s a good one!

Bookwormjillk I still haven‘t started this one…but I will eventually! In the meantime I did receive last month‘s book from you and will read it soon. Thank you so much! 1w

vlwelser I'm reading this alone it seems 😂 serves me right for lurking while you all read the last one. The book is good even if it's a bit slow. 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwormjillk you are welcome, I‘m glad it arrived safely. Just let me know when you are ready to pass it on. No rush, holidays and all. 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @vlwelser I started it last night! So go me! U-Haul and big furniture goes tomorrow so hopefully I can be settled in enough to read this one before the end of the month 😂 1w
vlwelser You're fine. I'm trying to stay on schedule because I have to travel for the holiday. Is there a January book yet? I like to plan and I didn't see a book list. 1w
Deblovestoread I‘m refining my commitments for the new year and would like to be removed from the tag list. Thank you 🩵 1w
Singout I don‘t think I‘m going to get very far with this one because I really want to do my #nonfiction2024 ones and I‘m helping my elderly parents move! (to a seniors‘ residential home😢). So I feel a bit of your pain. 6d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Deblovestoread no problem. I completely understand that 1d

Roxane Gay takes a deep dive into what it feels like to be a very large Black woman who “built her body into a fortress” after a preteen gang rape. Lots of powerful insights here into all the ways fatphobia and racism manifest themselves, and her story of working toward claiming the space, physical and social, that she is entitled to.

I was intrigued by this from the #Nonfiction2024 list, and hope to read the first volume when available. This sequel centres on the author‘s challenging interviews with his father and their complex relationship, intertwined with his father‘s grim narrative of survival and liberation from a series of Nazi death camps. I consider it non-fiction although it‘s often labelled as a graphic novel: creatively portraying people as various animals. #Maus

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Want to guess why it ends up on the banned booked list so often? 3w
Singout @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ostensibly because it has bad words and a picture of a naked mouse in it. But I can think of other reasons. I read a good story about how it was expunged from the library in Athens, Tennessee, and then somebody donated boxes of it to the library, and the kids distributed them everywhere. 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I heard the pictures of naked cartoon mice 🤷‍♀️. That‘s a great story from TN though 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I remember being a bit shocked, because from Tom and Jerry to Garfield, all cartoon mice are naked except maybe a bow tie 😂 3w

I wouldn't have picked this one up if it wasn't for @sebrittainclark 's #AuldLangSpine list but I'm glad I did! This was a really helpful and encouraging book on how to keep your home livable without stressing yourself out more. I don't have ADHD or depression, which is a big focus of the author's life, but anyone can relate to feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks and she provides useful manageable tips

An eye-opening and vulnerable sharing of the author‘s coming-out story as non-binary, in a culture that still is largely fixated on people identifying as one gender or the other, even if they are LGBT. I particularly appreciated the author‘s emergence reflected in varying responses of friends and family and ongoing fear of coming out and how to articulate it. I could also appreciate the extreme pain of a Pap test! #Nonfiction2024 #Genderqueer

TheBookHippie I learned a lot reading this one. 1mo

I really enjoyed listening to this memoir. Chin talks about his experience growing up as a gay Chinese American in 1980s Detroit, where his parents ran a long lasting Chinese restaurant. He discusses the turbulence of the city during that time, tensions with race, expectations of family, & coming to terms with his sexuality. Chin narrates the audiobook & does a great job inflecting it with character & humor

I'm gonna try to start catching up on reviews for books I've read the past few months. I finished this back in August 🫣
I took my time listening to this one and really enjoyed the introspection Kimmerer applies to nature. I appreciated the way she uses science as a tool to understand the beauty of the natural world, and the insights into indigenous culture.

McGhee takes the concept of a “zero-sum game“--someone always *has* to lose, --and skillfully uses it to analyze a form of white racism that manifests as resistance toward racialized people benefiting, even when white people are also set back: racism has a cost for all of us. Examples include barring access to public pools, union repression, lack of equal access to education and home ownership, and more.
