Every Canadian should read this book! An Obibway boy who is taken from his culture to be in a residential school in the early 1960s. It is sad and full of racism. As a Canadian, I feel ashamed as to how this could have been allowed to happen to so many children. As a descendent of The Ojibway people (Great Great Grandmother was Ojibway from Sault st Marie, Ont), I felt for this little boy being taken away from his culture. This book touched my heart
This is #17 in the Cork O‘Connor series. While I‘ve read his standalone books, I think I‘ve only read 1 book of this series. Krueger does a great job letting you in wherever you pick up the series. As usual, he puts you squarely in the story, bringing you close through his descriptions of nature and the characters. This story involves a plane crash, a military takeover of the crash site, and domestic terrorism. A bit too close to home actually.
An older book, but a very good read. Ultimately, it‘s about a lifestyle that was changed by colonization, and what the Ojibwe lost. We can, and still need to, learn so much from the indigenous people. A simple read, but with a lot behind it.
