What don't I love about this book? Nothing. I laughed, I cried, I got goosebumps in all the right places. Then I read a bit more about the background, and it was partially inspired by the Sixties Scoop, where the Canadian government removed Indigenous children from their homes and placed them with unrelated white, middle-class families. What they endured was beyond horrific, so perhaps Klune felt the need to show ⬇️
dabbe the positive effect of what can happen when children are given a loving, nurturing environment in which to embrace their differences. Some reviews I read lambasted Klune for writing such a feel-good story when the origin of it was so abominable, but I choose to see the story for what it is: a fantasy story about six magical kids, their loving mentor, Arthur, and dear Linus, the hero of this novel.
