pickVery well written history of 4 women who ruled England before Elizabeth. The section on Matilda is excellent. Very informative. The section on Eleanor of Aquitaine was absolutely fascinating. The latter two are not of the same level of interest but are still good.
I stepped outside onto the crowded green, looking for the blue of his overalls, the white-blond hair, but I didn‘t see him in the mass of people dancing and drinking and playing music. The sunlight hit my face and I shielded my eyes, but I already knew that I would find no sign of him.
The boy was gone.

pickSometimes i read a book about one historic period and it makes mention of preceding events i know next to nothing about, so then i have to read another book! This is about William of Orange and Mary, daughter of James II, who after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 became joint monarches of England. This had just the right level of detail for me - thorough but included enough personal and domestic detail to stop it being too dry. A fascinating read

pickJoanna was an amazing woman and was one of the only women to inherit her kingdom in her own right. She brought as much peace and prosperity as her horrible husbands would allow and her kingdom flourished into a power under her strong rule after her horrible husbands died.
The book gets deep into papel politics as Joanna played a surprisingly big role in the history of the Catholic Church.
3.5/5 fascinating but bogged in church politics
pick2 thumbs up, 5 stars, best read of 2024, and it will be hard to beat! Disclaimer: I've never been overly interested in the royals, never really followed what was going on outside of what made I headines. I didn't listen to this book when it first came out, there was so much talk about it that I didn't want it to influence my thoughts and again, I was just never that overly interested.
