This is on the longer side and it does seem to float along, but it is worth hanging in there. I read reviews that seemed to think of this as a history surrounding the satanic verses, or that it would be better to read the Bible instead. This has nothing to do with either of those things. This is literally a satire, painting in vivid color and detail the dangers of closed minded, absolute belief systems.

GingerAntics If that offends you, you‘re probably close minded and hold absolutist beliefs. This magical realism at its finest. Please stop taking it so seriously. I beg of you.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie so did I. It took me a minute to get everything straight because there are A LOT of characters and it‘s not necessarily in chronological order, but once I figured it out, I loved what he did here. 5d

I don‘t know why, but this stuck out to me. I keep saying it in my head now… especially when the word London pops up in the story.

Cute 500 piece puzzle 🍰🧁🥧🍧 while listening to the tagged book. It‘s a long listen, but really good so far. After reading Knife, my first Rushdie, I wanted this to be my second. The Satanic Versus will likely be my third.

This varied collection of essays is a great mix.I enjoyed reading Rushdie's insight into literature, writing and creativity so much. I wasn't so keen on the individual author appraisals, but that was more mood than dislike of content. I will go back and finish those at a later date.

Soubhiville Great! 2y

I have a few unread books by Rushdie on my shelves and for #authoramonth I dutifully pulled one off and bailed after 100 pages. Before trying a second I checked this essay collection out from the library to ensure I would finish something. Covering literature and art but also featuring pieces on his friendship with Carrie Fisher and Covid I enjoyed this deeper glimpse into the undeniably brilliant mind of an author whose books aren‘t all for me.

DivineDiana I am struggling through the classic “The Satanic Verses”. It is the only one that I own, and this gave me the perfect opportunity to finally read it. Your selection looks so much more enjoyable. 🙂 2y
Jas16 @DivineDiana I am going to try that one next but not feeling overly confident 2y
DivineDiana The audio is a challenging for me, but I think that I need to include audio to finish in a timely manner. 🙂 2y
Amiable I'm not a fan of magical realism so I defaulted to “Joseph Anton“ for this month. But it's taking me a while to get through it. So I also picked up another one of his to be able to finish the month -- “Luka and the Fire of Life.“ It's short, thank God. Maybe I should have tried this collection of essays instead. I definitely gravitate more towards nonfiction. 2y
