So Theo (L) and George (R) were super excited to find a book written about a magical talking hedgehog toy Piyyut.
.
.
It's intense, and if you need a support group for that ending.... I'm here!!

Flingogal However, wow! Don't be confused by the cute cover, this is a deep story with real issues (abuse, domestic violence, murder, incest, cannibalism... Do I go on??)
.
A deeply moving, disturbing fiction work that will make you question everything.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Did you read because of the 🦔? 3y
Flingogal @thegirlwiththelibrarybag no, I read because I enjoyed convenience store woman which was a previous book by the same author, but possibly the hedgehog made me notice the cover 🤣 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Flingogal, I haven‘t read either but it‘s on the tbr (edited) 3y

Didn‘t care for this one. It was a book club pick. The best thing about this book was the cover.

lynneamch Yup. Just finished and have to pan it too. Some social commentary about gender roles and societal expectations but others do it better. At least it was a quick read. May have been better as a short story 4y
allureofbeauty @lynneamch yea I‘m also glad it was at least quick. I admittedly didn‘t read the last like 20%. I just didn‘t care and it was the middle of my moms death and the pandemic and I didn‘t think we would have the meeting. A short story probably would have been a lot better for it. 4y
lynneamch Oh I'm so sorry about your mom. I hope you are doing ok and finding some comfort in spite of these already difficult times. 4y

So much of what we do and who we are is because of society and societal norms. It was fun getting a different perspective of this and to be reminded to be who you want to be.

Interesting novel (translated from Japanese). Murata's protagonist--more cog in the convenience store machine than human--provides an outsider's view of society's expectations. Her contrast with Shiraha and her dry, matter-of-fact narration intriguingly convey the spectrum of those who consider that we're only animals—close descendants of stone age humanity—and those who see us more as machines fulfilling our programming.
