Panpan

Didn‘t care for this one. It was a book club pick. The best thing about this book was the cover.

lynneamch Yup. Just finished and have to pan it too. Some social commentary about gender roles and societal expectations but others do it better. At least it was a quick read. May have been better as a short story 5y
allureofbeauty @lynneamch yea I‘m also glad it was at least quick. I admittedly didn‘t read the last like 20%. I just didn‘t care and it was the middle of my moms death and the pandemic and I didn‘t think we would have the meeting. A short story probably would have been a lot better for it. 5y
lynneamch Oh I'm so sorry about your mom. I hope you are doing ok and finding some comfort in spite of these already difficult times. 5y

So much of what we do and who we are is because of society and societal norms. It was fun getting a different perspective of this and to be reminded to be who you want to be.

Pickpick

Interesting novel (translated from Japanese). Murata's protagonist--more cog in the convenience store machine than human--provides an outsider's view of society's expectations. Her contrast with Shiraha and her dry, matter-of-fact narration intriguingly convey the spectrum of those who consider that we're only animals—close descendants of stone age humanity—and those who see us more as machines fulfilling our programming.

I just adore Keiko!

Keiko works part-time in a convenience store. She lives & loves her job. But the rest of the world would prefer her to be 'normal'. & she doesn't want to upset anyone.

This was a gorgeous, funny book about trying to fit in, but preferring to be happy. If you've ever given up a customer-service role for something 'with prospects', or fended off 'helpful' marriage suggestions from old friends, you might just identify with her.

Well, this is delightful!

Think I prefer the US cover though. **

** 11 hours later: I've changed my mind! Keiko's been working very hard to appear as a 'normal human'. I think she'd much prefer this cover!

Cinfhen It‘s on my list ~ glad to hear it‘s good 7y
