The Thirteenth Child | Erin A. Craig

I liked it a lot, but I gotta say: this is not a YA book, it‘s just New Adult in a funny outfit. I could have done with Margeaux‘s motivations/character being laid out more clearly, but it was a fun read nonetheless!

This is my third novel by Young this year. She is now amongst my auto buy authors. She gets the atmosphere just right. Her stories are set in worlds I want to live in, small close knit towns. Nature is an integral charcter.

When Shrike is crowned Oak King and fated to be killed by the Holly King to preserve the change of the season, he scrys for someone to help him and is lead to a mortal man. This was a fun but wandering read. There were a few things that felt like if cut, the book would be no less ritch. Due to this, the climactic battle feels very short. Overall, though, a fun fantasy story. I'd read more in this universe. #LGBTQIA #Fantasy #Birds

bookandbedandtea Sounds good. It reminded me of this book, which I read a few years ago and am now feeling a pull to read again. 3d
Kenyazero @bookandbedandtea sounds like it's based in the same ritual 🤩 I'm definitely going to look for this one. 3d

Okay, ultimately I quite liked this. I was a bit meh on the love triangle, but mostly I thought that the Welsh stuff was handled well, and I enjoyed Ffion and Tal's journey.

You want a good smut book and a Catholic daughter girl. This is your book. Enjoy it and you want want to put it down.

This is so far superficially very Welsh, but I guess we'll see.

Putting a warning in spoilers in the comments, to do with animal welfare.

shanaqui Spoilery warning:

Ffion's fox dies very early in the story (chapter 7).

I didn‘t mean to read this. I mean, I did *eventually*…but it was sitting in my stack the other night when I was really tired & I didn‘t think my brain could handle anything else. So, it got bumped up!

I‘ve been reading a lot of romance lately, in an attempt to recover from all the horror I read at the beginning of the month. 🙈 This was one of the better ones! Tender & sexy, with incredibly moving side relationships (father-son, & two sisters).

monalyisha *Note: I did not need the sprinkling of Taylor Swift references. But that‘s a me problem. 🫣 2w
TheBookHippie @monalyisha it‘d be a me problem too. I am not a fan. 🤣 2w
monalyisha @TheBookHippie We‘re outliers, for sure! 2w

TheBookHippie @monalyisha I‘m okay with that. 2w
monalyisha @TheBookHippie On the other hand, have you heard Fiona Apple‘s newest single (released this past May)? It‘s “a protest anthem against the cash bail system and pretrial detention, inspired by her years volunteering as a court watcher, focusing on the experiences of mothers who are incarcerated because they cannot afford bail.” That‘s the kind of artist who I wish had her level of fandom, power, & influence. 💘 (edited) 2w
monalyisha @TheBookHippie Musically, I gave Folklore a shot. It wasn‘t for me. 2w
TheBookHippie @monalyisha I adore her and yes. 2w
DGRachel @monalyisha @TheBookHippie I am right there with you in the TS not-a-fan club. I‘m going to go look for the Fiona Apple single now. 2w
monalyisha @DGRachel It‘s not my favorite of hers or anything but WOW, what a powerhouse, you know? 💪🏻 2w
Laughterhp Ugh, I have this book on my tbr pile. Hopefully they aren‘t too bad throughout the book! 2w
monalyisha @Laughterjp They‘re not overwhelming. I‘m just a grump. 😝 2w

I went into this book thinking dark academia with a splash of spooky. Nope. It‘s full horror and I don‘t even think dark academia should be remotely related to it.

Full warning, this is gross in a gore way. An excellent book but maybe don‘t eat while reading…
