pickThe introduction by Elizabeth Crawford to this sweet, feel-good book by Noel Streatfeild writing as Susan Scarlett correctly says that it offers "daydreams to her readers". These are mid-century romances & like Streatfeild's books for children, are suffused with warmth & brimming with charming details of everyday life. I loved being with the Brown family, especially as they made their way through their delicious Sunday tea! #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub
batsy I also loved the details about fashion & modelling during that period, & the way the labour that goes into it was described in detail. And to learn that socialites paid a "publicity man" to do their PR back then—some things are eternal. I was less enamoured of David because as @jlhammar points out the way he sometimes treated or spoke to Annabel felt a bit superior, but that's the way it probably was in that era, especially with aristocratic men. 1y
