Turned in my summer reading program sheet for a mug & 2 coupons @ Baker Book House. Picked up this book with $10 in gift certificates that I earned last weekend with the help of a friend. #BookmarkSwap mail courtesy of @jessinikkip & @EH2018 #BecomingMrsLewis #PattiCallahan #ThomasNelson

Mehso-so

Set during the Great Depression, this story follows a hodgepodge of diverse characters (a 15 yo pregnant homeless girl, two men-one black, one white, who in wandering to find jobs also find and raise a “lost” baby, two itinerant preachers-one good, one not-so-good and a child preacher-on his own at 14). They follow disparate paths, searching for different things (jobs, food, a home, a family, love, acceptance) 🔽🔽

robinb but above all simply trying to survive through a dark period in history. And in surviving, their disparate paths lead to the same destination.

I wanted to like this more than I actually did, and I‘m not quite sure why I didn‘t. The writing was fine. I had some annoying moments when the narrative skipped over years, and I couldn‘t keep track of time/ages. 🔽🔽

robinb In the end, as a whole, I think it‘s just that I‘ve read better stories based both in the South and during this period. 3/5⭐️ Out 7/9

Pickpick

I‘m rating this as a pick for its weaving of stories about three strong women. They are disillusioned by the men in their lives in various ways yet discover their own inner strengths and become who they are truly meant to be. The stories are told in three voices in alternating chapters. There were some slow moments and no surprises at the ending, but overall I enjoyed it. 4/5⭐️

There was a lot going on in this one. It centers around 3 women (and one in absentia...everyone needs an Aunt Maddie) and is told in alternating chapters by them. The bookshop itself becomes its own character as they live and learn through the wisdom from beloved books, their past mistakes and their friendship. And for bibliophiles, there are 70 books alluded to throughout the book. 😊 Enjoyable read. 4/5⭐️

robinb I also really liked that the importance of female friendships was stressed here and how vital they are to a woman‘s well-being. (edited) 9mo

This was a sweet story featuring a woman who faces disillusionment, tragic losses and danger but through faith perseveres, overcomes and triumphs to find new love and a brighter future. Well-written if a bit predictable. 4/5⭐️

Thanks to #NetGalley and #ThomasNelson for the ARC.

I LOVED this story about a family of three generations of southern women and their home on Glory Road in south Alabama. I fell in love with the beauty and simplicity of the writing...it all felt so genuine that I could taste the home cooking and feel the hot summer breeze of a southern night. Wonderful characters, life lessons and the importance of family and love. Will be reading this author‘s backlist. 5/5⭐️

Next up is a novel revolving around three generations of southern women, set where you might ask? Just right down the road from me in Perry, Alabama on Glory Road (fictitious). 😉😊👍🤣🤞🤞🤞

That cover is giving me serious spring yearnings.💜 #coverlove

Mehso-so

Unfortunately this was probably closer to a “Pan” than a “So-so” for me. The murder from the title did not even happen until 56% into the story. And it was never really clear to me if it was an intentional murder or more of an accidental one (if that makes any sense). I found the writing often hard to follow and had no real feeling for any of the characters. And while this is the start of a series, I don‘t have plans to read more. 2.75/5⭐️ 🔽

Jess_Read_This Bummer! This one has been on my TBR. I just picked up another book by this author to check out her style. 1y
robinb @Jess_Read_This Maybe it was just me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I felt very chagrined as when I was posting my review I noticed some others really enjoyed it. 😩🤔 I hate when that happens...makes me feel like I totally missed something! Don‘t let me turn you off it if you‘d like to try it. 1y

Jess_Read_This @robinb My library doesn‘t have it yet. So I settled on another of hers to see how I might like her. I‘ll let you know! 1y
robinb @Jess_Read_This thanks! I‘ll be interested to see what another is like. 1y
Jess_Read_This Ugh. I couldn‘t get into her books. I tried but the writing just felt “off” to me. Too forced and just awkward. I bailed on both. 1y
robinb @Jess_Read_This Sorry for your waste of time, but this makes me feel a little better about how I felt about it and my review. Just not for me. 1y
